“Mr. Potter,” I said, trying to figure out something to tell him so he would let it go.

“Please think about it, I don’t want you to lose them and they to lose you. This type of bond isn’t a common occurrence. Whether or not you see it now, it’s fate Katarina.” He took my hand in his. “They’ve always been yours, balancing you out just as much as you balance them. You are the sun, and they are your moon. Not many of us are lucky to find our mate, but you my darling have found three men who would do anything for you. Each of them is a part of you that has always needed balance because I see you do the same for them.”

Damn Mr. Potter and his introspective messages.

“I just want… you all deserve to live a full life with everything you’ve worked for,” he said, his voice full of emotion.

I launched myself at him, grateful that I didn’t fly through him. I hugged him with every ounce of my being, and all the love and admiration I had for him.

“Thank you,” I whispered, as tears fell down my face. “You were kind to me even when I wasn’t and believed in me more than anyone has. You’ve taken care of me and given me the confidence I've always needed, showing me that I just had to trust in myself.”

“I would have loved to have a daughter like you, Katarina. I would have been proud to call you my family.”

He hugged me again.

“Now, I know it's the last thing you want to do, but would you like to have a service for your sister. Lay her to rest, so she will be free.”

I pulled away, pursing my lips, hating the finality of laying her to rest, but nodded my head.

“Tomorrow?” I asked, wanting just one more day to get my head wrapped around losing Serena and the secrets she had just told me.

“Of course, that will give me plenty of time to get something ready. Shall we observe witch customs?” He stood back.

“How did you honor the dead?” I asked.

“We burned our dead and after the flames had died, the family usually took a run for the last time with their loved ones.”

“Then, let’s do that,” I said, getting up from my chair. “I’ll add to the circle today and then I’ll help you.

“I’ll take care of it, you worry about the spell,” he said, before he kissed my forehead leaving me alone in the room. I still had time until I needed to add to the circle, so I grabbed a book and opted for a little bit of escapism before my reality came crashing down.

“You look beautiful.”Lucien kissed my bare shoulder the following evening.

The dress that Serena had packed for me was very fitting for a funeral, and I didn’t know if she planned it for this specific circumstance. My anger had slowly dissipated, turning intosadness, thinking she had to carry this burden on her shoulders and here I was getting mad at her for the sins of our family.

“Thank you,” I said, putting on a necklace Serena had given me.

“You ready, Katarina?”

I turned around to see Zev and Aeon by the door dressed all black as well. All they needed were some gun holsters and jackets to fit right in with the mafia. Goddess, why were they so damn handsome, and how did I get so lucky?

I nodded my head as I slipped on my Vans. This dress was made for some killer heels, but I wouldn’t survive with heels in the dirt. We left the room together with Lucien and Zev on either side of me as we came down the stairs.

Zev’s hand was at the small of my back, searing heat into me and I couldn’t help but glance at him. His hair was tied back today, his beard was trimmed shorter than usual and he exuded confidence that made me want to jump him right here. He glanced at me with heat in his gaze, like he knew what I was thinking.

“Where is she?” A yell came from outside.

Ryder had come back.

I rushed down the stairs out the door feeling the cool night brush against my warm skin. I spotted him in front of Mr. Potter who was right in front of Ryder trying to tell him something. The moment our eyes connected, my lips trembled.

“No,” he breathed out. “I tried to come back sooner, I…”

Ryder looked defeated as he fell to his knees.

“She called a few days ago,” he said, as I fell to my knees next to him. “When I went to the manor she wasn’t there, and no one knew where she was. They thought she had been taken, but in her call she said she was coming here.”

“There was a rescue for Clodius and she was…”
