He kissed his way back up to my neck. “Do you remember our first time?” he asked, as if he’d been reading my thoughts.

I panted. “No.”

He licked my earlobe, drawing a gasp from my throat. “Don’t worry. I’ll make sure you remember every bit of tonight.”

I wrapped my arms around his neck, curling my legs around his waist and giving him permission to do whatever he wanted with me. I didn’t care that we were in the parking lot or that someone would see. I just wanted him,Right now!

My entire body was aching, the organ between my legs weeping and begging for his attention. “I want to remember it this time.”

Burying his head between my cleavage, he let out a harsh breath and stopped kissing me.

“Why are you stopping?” I slid my fingers through his hair, peppering him with kisses. “Don’t stop, Vlad. Please.”

He lowered me to the ground, his eyes dark and distant. “I can’t do this.”

Holding my ripped dress to my chest with one hand, I searched his eyes. “Why? What did I do wrong? Is it something I said?”

“It’s not you, Mariana. It’s me.” He slammed his hand to his forehead. “Fuck.”

“Vlad?” I called his name softly, confused as to what the problem was with him. Why was he suddenly acting this way? “Is something wrong?”

“You said you wanted to run from me, Mariana. This is your chance to do that.” He took one predatory step towards me, his expression cold and his jaw twitching. He was different from the Vlad I knew. “This is the only chance you get.”

He moved away, climbed into his car and drove off.

I couldn’t remember how long I stood in the parking lot, half-naked and confused as I tried to process what had just happened.

Chapter 8 - Vlad

“Easy, man. You’ll get drunk.” Alexei had his eyes glued on me inquisitively. He didn’t ask any questions when I asked him out for a drink, but I knew he was dying with curiosity, wondering what got me so worked up I needed a drink by one a.m.

To be honest, I wondering the same thing. What was I so angry for? Why was there a storm raging inside me over Mariana?

At the parking lot earlier … no, way before that, while we were still in the restaurant and she named all the reasons she needed to stay away from me, unfiltered rage slithered through every cell inside me.

I was intoxicated by Mariana. That was the only logical explanation for my absolutely illogical behavior.

I’d love to think I was merely attracted to her, that I was infatuated with her body and by her looks. But the more time I spent with her, the clearer it became that it was more than just her body.

Mariana was intelligent and sharp-witted. She was smart-mouthed too. Those were qualities I didn’t often see in women because most women around me would lick my feet to get what they wanted from me.

But she was different from those women.

So different that she’d etched my mind, becoming my waking thought every single day. I wasn’t sure if I hated that or loved it, but one thing I was certain of was that yesterday was her last chance to be free of me. I’d been generous enough to give her that option, knowing that it didn’t matter if she ran or not,‘cause I was going to follow her to the end of the world if it meant I would have her by my side.

And that was a problem. I wasn’t supposed to like any woman that much.

“You shouldn’t have called me to drink with you if you were just going to keep all your thoughts inside.”

My jaw clenched. “I’m your boss. I can call you just to have you look at my face all night if I want.”

“That’s abuse of power, Vlad. And we’re best friends.”

Funny a guy who killed and tortured people for a living was speaking of abuse of power. I gulped down my drink, the bitterness crawling down my throat at the pace of a slot and mixing with the bitterness in my stomach. “Best friends my ass.”

“What’s wrong with you? You’ve been off lately.”

“I have.” Suddenly, the thought that Alexei and Mariana must’ve known each other for a while crossed my mind. “That girl—Mariana. How well do you know her?”
