There she was. In a crooked, hidden corner, standing on the tip of her heel-clad toes, stretching her hands upward to a switch.

She had her back to me, and I enjoyed the view of her midriff through her yellow top as she gripped the lever and pulled down. The lights went out and she turned around.Click, Click, Click. She walked towards me, completely oblivious that I stood in her way.Click, Click...

Her soft body collided harshly against my chest and something thick, like her purse, bumped against my thighs.“Oomph!” Her breasts pressed in through the light fabric briefly, and I grabbed her shoulders firmly, keeping her grounded before she staggered backwards. Her shoulders tightened and her breaths came out harsh and ragged. I smirked, though doubting she could see. “Mariana.”

“Jesus!”Her hand flew to her chest and I heard her stomp her foot.

“Not him.”

“Ha. Ha. So not funny,” She smacked my chest lightly and made to withdraw her hand but I caught her wrist and yanked her closer. I could barely make out her face in the darkness, but I smelled her. Her scent hit my nose, full forced and overpowering. It traveled to my head, and I felt light.Flowers. Smelled like a bouquet of blooming roses and wild flowers. I pulled her even closer and dipped my head.

“What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be with your fiancée?”

My heart clenched at the accusation in her tone. I sniffed her neck and rubbed my cheek against hers. “I came to see you.”

That tore a dry chuckle from her lips. “And would you look at that? Oh, the irony. We can’t see each other. That must be a sign, right?”

My lips brushed her hair. “Mere coincidence,” I grunted. “I should be offended that you did not recognize me.”

“Yes,” her hot breath fanned my ears. My pulse kicked up, and I burned up quickly. “Because I have eyes that can see in the dark.”

“Funny.” I moved a step back and let go of her wrist. “I can smell you from a thousand miles away.”

“Of course, you can. You have superpowers.” She scoffed and walked—stomped—past me. I latched my hand on her arm before she could get past, but she didn’t stop walking.

“Where are you going?”

“Outside? Away?”

“Thought you said you didn’t have eyes for the dark?” I didn’t mask the amusement in my voice. It was one of those times when I took off my tough armor to express humor. For her, I could do that. But her tone remained flat and dry.

“I memorized the blueprints of this place. I know my way in and out of here, but that’s without unpredictable obstacles, like tall, blue-eyed men, standing in the way.”

I released her arm. We stood by the glass doors now. A flood of silver moonlight poured in and I saw her face more clearly now. Her blonde hair fell in gentle waves below her shoulder, shielding her face. Her teeth dug into her lower lips, and her eyes...

She’d sounded tough but the glassy look in her eyes spoke contrasting volumes. I put one leg behind the other, and she blinked. Her gaze softened.

“No,wait!Don’t... don’t go, Vlad.” She sighed. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it that way.”

She thought I was upset and leaving. Which should have been so. The first time a woman insulted me, she took her last breath. I’d dragged her by the hair down the fucking stairs with a gun in her mouth to send across a warning to the rest of her co-sluts. Like I said, I’d done crazy shit.

But with Mariana, it felt different. The tempting desire to put a bullet through her skull did not rear its ugly head.Something else did; and one look at her fumbling fingers and downcast gaze made it burn hotter.

“What happened?” Anger crept beneath my skin, slow but scorching.

“Nothing...”

“Mariana.”

She huffed, turned around, and locked the doors. “Nothing happened, Vlad.”

“You’re lying.”

Her eyes snapped back to mine. “You won’t let it go, will you?”

“No.”

“Still. I’m not telling you.”
