Mariana appreciated her with a smile and I twisted slightly to shut the door after my sister-in-law.

“That was... a lot.” I moved towards her bed and occupied the space Lilianna had previously occupied. I leaned forward and tucked a few blonde locks behind her ears. She blushed. The bruises on her face grew fainter over the past week and her lips healed quickly. The doctor advised a lot of rest, especially for the sake of the baby’s health.

“No one asked you to stay through it all,” she mumbled, and laughed when I kissed her jaw.

“I told you I wasn’t going to leave your side.”

She cupped my cheeks and stroked my chin with a finger. My heart skittered and halted to a stop. If only the woman knew the things she did to me, even on a hospital bed. Her eyes held seriousness when she said, “And you didn’t. Thank you.”

“For what?” I breathed, searching her eyes, and doing everything in my power to not stare at her lips. Rest, the doctor said. She needed rest. She’d been stressed enough lately and we didn’t want it affecting the baby.

“For watching over me. For not leaving my side. You didn’t have to. I know you have important work.”

I grabbed her wrist and narrowed my eyes. “Nothing, moya zvezda... Nothing is more important than you and our baby.”

Her smile grew wider and she pressed a kiss on my nose. “You know, I’m beginning to think I like you, Mr. Vlad Vadim. I really like you.”

I lowered my head and kissed her hand, grinning triumphantly, like I was fucking high on something. My heart soared and I felt lightheaded.

“You know,” I said, gazing into her eyes. “I think I really like you too. How about you get dressed and let me take you somewhere?”

“Where?”

“You’ll see.”

She flashed a suspicious smile at me. “Okay.”

I wore a suit and left the bedroom to pick a car for our date. Moments later, she joined me outside wearing a simple red dress that showed off her curves and cleavages. She had a small bump that was hardly noticeable. “How do I look?”

I skimmed her. “I think my heart just stopped for a moment. You look beautiful.”

“Thank you.”

I helped her into the car and drove to a restaurant Alexei had helped me book this morning.

Mariana looked in awe as we walked in, her eyes darting to the guitarists in a corner of the dimly lit restaurant. “Did you book this place?”

“I did.” I pulled a chair for her in front of a table decorated with roses. Then I rounded the table and sat on the seat across hers. “Do you like it?”

She nodded happily. “Yes.” She smiled at me, her eyes glistening. “What is the occasion?”

“Sure you don’t want to eat first?”

She shook her head. “I’m too nervous for that right now. I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but…” She trailed off, her teeth sinking into her lips.

“You’re not getting ahead of yourself, moya zvezda.” I signaled for the guitarist to play. I pulled out a diamond ring from my pocket. “I want to ask if you’ll marry me.”

Red tainted her cheeks. “Are you being serious right now?”

He smiled. “Do I look like I’m joking?” I cleared my throat. “Anyway, will you marry me, Mariana Lop…”

She let out a high-pitched, “Yes!” before I could even finish my question. “I’ll marry you, Vlad Vadim.”

I slid the ring on her finger. “Thank you for making my life complete. I love you so much, Mariana. And I’ll love our baby so much more.”

She threw her arm around me, hugging me tight and peppering me with kisses. “Thank you for making me a complete woman, Vlad. I love you.”
