“A lady came to see me at the gallery today,” I said as he sat on a stool and I walked his food to him. “She told me to call her. She said she knew something on how to take down the Outfit and she looked … desperate. Oh, and she mentioned not telling Maxim anything about it.”

Surprise flickered on Vlad’s face just as it did on mine. “She knows Maxim?”

“It seemed so, but why would she say not to tell him?”

Vlad spaced out for a moment in deep thought. We both knew that the war may have subsided, but the embers of conflict still smoldered beneath the surface.

He sighed after a moment. “Let’s get out of here. Clear your head and mine, and we’ll talk about the mystery woman later.”

I elevated my head, staring into his watchful gaze. “But Sasha...”

“Lilianna’s on her way with Oleg.”

He intertwined our fingers and kissed my knuckles. “Do you have a plan?” I wiggled a brow and giggled a bit too loud when his teeth grazed my earlobe.

“We’ll take the Ferrari,” he whispered, his hot breath fanning my ear, and I grinned.

“You’re the best, babe.”

Vlad and I decided to escape. The wind whispered through the open windows as we navigated the winding roads, leaving behind the worries of the Outfit and all the expectations people had of us for another day. For a moment, the weight of our responsibilities lifted, and our laughter mingled with the rustles of leaves under the night’s sky.

As we rode, the moon hung high above in the horizon, casting a mild glow across the sky. I glanced at him, laughing when he revved his engine and jerked forward. “I love you, Mariana,” he shouted above the noise, sounding like a teenage boy professing his crush.

“I know!” I shouted back and hit the gas.

The road ahead of us might have been uncertain and as dark as the night itself. But when I glanced over my shoulder and saw him...mineriding with a glint in his blue eyes and his blackhair flailing over his leather jacket, all I could think about was how much I loved this man.

He’d told me once, and I never forgot.

You and me together, Mariana... We can conquer this fucking world. All you have to do is trust me, okay?

I turned around and looked at the winding road ahead, with a content smile on my lips.

“I trust you.”
