“You don’t know anything,” he shouts behind me, and I turn back and tip up the side of my mouth. He just confirmed everything I needed to know. I was right.

Later that night I see the small one-bedroom apartment my woman lives in and decide it’s time I got her a real place. She cooks me an amazing meal and then I get to make love to her before she tells me I have to leave because men aren’t allowed on the premises overnight. I wanted to argue, but I let her go this time.

I’ve talked Dmitri into giving me a couple of days without him coming over. It was hard, but I needed to do it for my own sake. I have secrets that I’m still keeping from him. I’m fairly certain he’s having me followed too. But when Ly called and said it was important we meet, I had to figure it out. So here I am acting like I’m sneaking around as I head out of Clare’s House. I make it down the block and turn the corner. I jump back around and sure enough, I see a man in a suit stop and turn to look into the business in front of him.

Fuck.

I rush down the sidewalk toward the cybercafe. I step inside and subtly shake my head to stop Lyric from waving at me. She nods and returns her attention to her laptop. With her facing the doorway, I only have a couple of options. I can either sit behind her with my back to the door and her, or I can sit at the table across the aisle from her. We’d have to speak too loud for that, and I don’t want to give her away by looking at her. I wait at the counter for a moment. When I don’t hear the door open, I look back and see the guy in the suit is across the street watching the cafe.

Damn it, Dima. I’m so mad at him. Good thing he’s not here because I’d get a spanking for cussing him out. I need some privacy. I tried to explain to him we were dating and not a real couple, so he couldn’t see me every day. I know he hated that. He wants to be with me all the time.

After I get my latte, I look around and make a decision. I move toward the seat that backs Lyric’s.

As I approach, she lifts her phone to her ear. “Hold your phone up like you’re on it,” she says, and I do as she says once I’m seated.

“You’re being followed,” she says, and I can’t stop the laugh.

“You think. Dmitri.” It’s all I say.

“His hacker is still digging, and I’m doing everything I can to keep him out.”

“Sorry. How is Ainsley? Do you need money?”

“Stop. We can take care of ourselves. It’s about time she learned to live within her means.”

“But if I can help, I want to.”

“Have you talked to your father yet?”

“No.” I grit my teeth.

“Why?” she asks, and I want to lie to her, but I don’t.

“Just leave it, Ly.”

“I can’t. Ainsy wants to meet up so we can discuss the next stage of the plan. I think we should stop.”

I shrug and remember she can’t see me. “I agree with you. You know I didn’t want to do this in the beginning. I’m worried about what happens if they find out.”

“I know. Right now, I’m worried about you. I came across some chatter. The Triad still has you in their sights. I’m trying to get a deeper look into it.”

“What?” I can’t stop the motion and spin in my chair to look at her. As I do, the front door opens and I almost cringe, but it stops me from breaking her cover. What the hell is he doing here?

“Say goodbye as soon as he sits down.” Her voice lowers, and I turn back around and pretend I’m talking to someone on the phone.

“Okay, I’ll talk to you soon.” I hang up as he sits down across from me. He smirks and I worry he’s figured me out. “Mr. Morosov, what a surprise? How can I help you?” I can hear the sugary sweetness in my voice and try to calm myself before I ruin everything.

“I come for two people we care about. I hope you don’t mind me joining you?” His deep voice is heavily accented.

I smile and wave my hand for him to proceed. “Yes, what can I do for you?”

He looks around the cafe, and I notice his eyes flitting across my shoulder to where Ly is seated.

“Dima is quite taken with you.” His voice gets a bit tighter.
