How did she get past us?

The office door was open, and no one notified me that she left. I return to Andrei and Sparrow. She looks at me and smiles.

“Lennon said she had to get back. Something was going on at Clare’s House. She said she’d call you later.”

I nod when I really want to storm out of the room or yell, but Sparrow didn’t have anything to do with it.

LENNON

Ipush through the doors into the lobby, and I’m shocked to see the police and others here. I need to get them back so they don’t scare any of the tenants. I direct them into the visitation room off the lobby.

“I got here as soon as I could. What’s going on?” I ask them.

“Ma’am, we received a call from your security staff about an attempted break-in. When we looked around the area, we noticed a vehicle was damaged. Could you come with us?”

“Yes, but we need to keep you guys from being seen by the ladies who live here. It could cause them to panic.”

I follow them out and around to the side where the employee parking is. It’s my car that has been damaged. The windows are all broken out and the tires slashed.

“Oh my God, that’s my car!” My hand flies to my mouth.

I have some money in my savings that I can use to pay for repairs. But it will strap me, and I still have to pay to have my things moved out of the condo. I shake off those thoughts. I’ll take care of it soon.

“Where is the break-in?” I ask, and they lead me around the block to what is the back of Clare’s House but still has business fronts. There is a walkway only on this side that leads from the street to a gate that goes into the courtyard where the pool area is. Clare’s House is the outline of a large square taking up all four corners of one block. In the center is the pool and playground for the kids. The gate lock has been damaged, and the camera looking down on the area has also been damaged.

“I’ll call our security company and have everything repaired tonight. I’d like to file a report.” From the looks of it, no one got through. The lock held, but the camera was damaged beyond repair. “I need this camera working because some of the women here still have abusive spouses out there.”

“We understand that, ma’am. We should probably talk though. For this to be damaged and your car destroyed, you could be the intended target.”

“I don’t see why?”

“Are any of those spouses out to get you?”

I think about the cop’s question and can’t think of anyone. “I don’t think so.”

“Well, we’ll file a report.”

We walk back around the street and head for my car. As they’re taking pictures, I watch Dmitri’s car pull up. He looks at my car and then at me.

“What happened?” he demands as he takes me in his arms.

“I don’t know. It’s why I left. Security called me.”

“You need more security.”

“I’ll have to hire more because they think the person who did this also tried to break into the shelter.” I watch him tense.

“Sir, what do you have to do with Ms. Bronwyn?” the cop asks, and I notice him checking out Dmitri’s tattoos.

“He’s my friend,” I say at the same time as Dmitri says, “She’s mine.”

“Yours?” The cop ignores what I said.

“Does this have something to do with you, Mr. Volkov?” They know exactly who he is. I should’ve known.

Dmitri scoffs and shakes his head while he pulls me away from them and toward the front entrance.
