He turns and moves to a rear exit, where I see another man. Bratva soldiers and my friends are hot on my heels. I raise my gun and fire again. This time I hit the general between the eyes. He falls to the ground, crumpling in his spot.

The big man with Lennon yells something in Chinese before he turns and lowers Lennon to the ground. I’m glad he didn’t throw her, but he still drops her hard.

I barrel toward him, not caring about myself, just her. I plow into his chest and his arms wrap around me. He’s bigger than me by a good four inches, making him almost seven feet tall. And he has a lot more bulk than me. Some of his is fat, but he’s still massive. His arms tighten and I fight him. I punch him in the face with my free arm. My other is pinned to my side. That doesn’t stop him. I rear back my head and headbutt him in the nose. I hear the satisfying crack, but again, it doesn’t stop him. Blood and tears roll down his face. I know he’s not crying. It’s just his eyes watering.

Mikhail hits him in the back before he’s attacked by a man, but he still doesn’t stop. I feel my ribs starting to give, and that’s when my adrenaline kicks in. I won’t let my child be born without me. I must stay alive for Lennon.

Using my thumb, I dig it into the gunshot wound in his shoulder. His grip loosens, and I punch his face again. He drops me and steps back. I hear the others around me, but all I’m focused on is the man who hit my wife.

He lunges for me again, but this time I’m ready with my knife in my hand. I stab at his hands, arms, and body as he comes at me. He steps back in shock, giving me the space I need.

I pull my second knife, ready to end this and get to my wife. As he runs back at me, I hunch down. It looks like I’m giving in, but I grab him around the waist, stabbing him in both kidneys. I keep a hold of him when he rears back and use my strength to lift him up and pound him into the cement floor. I hear the sick snap of his neck giving. When I step back, I see his head angled funny.

“Get my knives,” I bark at the soldier by me and step to my wife.

I gingerly take her in my arms and see the bruises on her face from where he hit her now and obviously earlier. One of her arms is swelling up and bruising. I’m fairly certain it’s broken. Her wrists are wounded from being bound.

My long legs eat up the distance back to the entrance we came in through. Soldiers have all of the Triad and mercenaries under control. As soon as we get to the car, Lyric slides over and smoothes her sister’s hair back to look at her face.

Tears roll down her cheeks. “I did this. I’m so sorry. Please wake up, Lenny.”

Alek pulls her into his arms, and she continues to cry.

We head for the hospital. I need to make sure she and the baby are okay.

LENNON

Beeping sounds and pain greet me as I open my eyes. I look around the dimmed room. Lyric is sitting in Aleksei’s lap. They are cuddled up sleeping. Sparrow is the same in Andrei’s. I don’t see Ainsley or my father. Mikhail is standing at the door. He sees me and nods.

I look to my side, and there is my husband. His head is laying on the bed at my hip. His big hand that has bruised knuckles is resting on my stomach. I start to panic until I look over his shoulder and see two monitors. One is measuring the baby’s heart rate. I don’t know what the other one is for. It’s farther away and I can’t see it very well in the dimness.

Something settles deep inside of me.

A calmness. My baby is still alive.

I go to slide my hand into Dmitri’s short hair and notice the cast on my arm. I try to reach with my other arm, but it won’t move very far. I look down and see a soft cloth restraint on it, holding me to the bed.

“What?” I must say it loud because everyone in the room jumps up, including Dmitri.

“We’ll give you a moment,” Andrei says. “Welcome back, sestra.”

I’m almost distracted by him calling me sister until my husband caresses my cheek.

“I’ll be back,” Lyric says and smiles softly at me.

“Ainsley?” I ask her.

“Don’t worry. You need your rest.” Her smile gets bigger, and I don’t understand it.

The door clicks closed as my guards move in front of it.

“Why am I restrained?” I look at Dmitri. I see the pain on his face as his eyebrows crinkle and his lips pinch. “Are you okay?”

“I’m sore, but you are the worry.Moya kukla, I restrained you. You’ll stay like that until you give birth unless you start listening to me.”

“I didn’t run. I swear. I needed to get away from Mac. I knew you were at the fight.”
