I want to see him. I want a good look at him.

I feel so empty without him.

“Orlie.”

Orlie’s eyes shoot to me. “Oh, my god,” he says. “Oh my –”

“My glasses, can you –”

He fumbles to get my glasses on my face with one hand.

“Is he okay?” I don’t know what happened and I don’t care. I need my baby.

“He’s perfect. He’s…” Orlie leans over to the side of the bed and cradles the baby in his arms so I can see him.

Scrunched little red face, lips slick with saliva, puffy cheeks. Perfect.

“Ten fingers, ten toes. And he’s huge. Seven pounds, two ounces.”

I breathe a sigh of relief. “Can I –”

“Here…” Orlie places our son in my arms gently, helping me position my arms and support his head as my strength comes back. “Owen, this is Mommy.”

My heart sings.

Mommy. Holding her little Owen.

Owen babbles for a moment before settling into the strange bed of my chest. “Oh, it’s okay, it’s me, baby, it’s…”

I can’t believe it. I’m a mother. “How long was I…”

“We got here at around eleven and…” Orlie glances at his watch. “Nearly nine now.”

“Oh, Owen, honey, I’m sorry it took me so long,” I say with a smile, a couple of tears running down my cheeks. “I’m here now. I’m right here.”

Orlie touches my leg and rubs it. “You had to have an emergency c-section. And there were some complications. He was breech and you started bleeding and…” He clears his throat. “Your placenta ruptured. It was so scary, Kira.”

“I’m sorry.”

“No, don’t apologize. How could you apologize for –“ Orlie half laughs. “I just thought I might lose you. I thought I’d have to do it by myself.” He lowers his head and shakes it.

I tighten my arms around Owen. “But you don’t. I’m right here.”

Orlie looks back at me. He smiles. “You two look perfect together.”

“Do we? I feel like I have some catching up to do,” I say, rocking my little one.

“You’ll be caught up in no time.” Orlie pushes some hair out of my face and cups my cheek.

I trace the line of Owen’s nose and then the space under his eyes. “Wow. He’s amazing.”

“Amazing. Looks just like you.”

I snort. “You can’t see that yet.”

“Maybe I’m trying to put that out in the universe so he takes after you more than me.”

“You’re an idiot. Now kiss me.”
