Disgusting? Gross?

“Hot. Oh my god, that’s so fucking hot.” Kira throws herself around me and I push open the door, happy to take her on the first flat surface we can find.

“Orlie?”

I alert from my place on the couch. I’ve finally relaxed after days of pacing around the cabin, trying to figure out ways I could work that wouldn’t be dubbed working. Kira finally made me pick up a book from one of the tall bookshelves. I’ve been attempting to read Faulkner, which is just as joyless as it sounds. But giving me something to focus on is good for getting me to unwind.

What’s been even better is having Kira and our extracurriculars as an outlet.

We’ve been sleeping together for five days. That’s not all we’ve been doing. We’ve taken jogs and hikes together. Had meals together. Watched movies together too. It’s like a prolonged sleepover where we also get to fuck.

And man is itideal.

Hearing her call out my name is usually a sign for me to come get her and have my way with her.

But the way she says it from the office is different.

“Could you come look at something for me?”

It’s not wanting. It’s serious. Like the way she sounds at work when she’s talking to her team.

I put my book down and pad into the office where Kira is sitting in the desk chair, knees drawn up and hunched over the computer.

I’ve seen Kira many ways since I met her and even more so since we accidentally ended up at this cabin together.

This way, with her glasses at the end of her nose, her hair tied into a messy bun, and her brow furrowed as she tries to problem-solve might just be my favorite.

“What’s up?” I ask, leaning up against the doorframe as casually as I can.

Her eyes flick up to me. “I’m trying to do some preliminary design of the lobby and I’m having trouble figuring out how best to organize the students. Come look.”

I circle the desk and lean over her shoulder to look at the screen. Kira is working with a rough mockup of a classroom from the perspective of a teacher.

“I’ve put the desks on risers so that the teacher can see everyone –”

“Yeah, that’s smart.”

“But I still feel like for a classroom of twenty, this is too chaotic for a teacher to look at.”

I tilt my head to the side. “I see what you mean. This is just a stopping point, though, right? Between activities?”

“Sure. Yes, but this is the space for questions mid-lesson so that they can continue their VR experience without having to remove the headset.”

I smile. “How about you just use some sort of question trigger? That way only those with questions will be filtered into the lobby.”

“That makes sense. However, doesn’t that eliminate the social element for the kids?”

“Kids in VR can’t handle a social element.”

Kira smiles and leans her head in her hand. “Oh, come on. That’s gotta be a part of the fun, right?”

“Teachers already have it hard enough with kids running amok in the real world, let alone the virtual one.”

“Well, there’d be caps on what they can do, of course. It’s not like a video game where they can run around and punch things.”

“Right, but during a lesson, I think kids should be limited to their activity and access to the teacher.”

Kira rubs her chin and nods. “I see your point. Maybe we can work at implementing a social part of the program that teachers can opt to use or students can use for experimentation.”
