To be clear, what Orlie and I had wasn’t even close to love. It was sex. Lots of it. Intense and incredible. Not love.

I didn’t dare let it get that far.

And it was for the best. Orlie clearly proved what type of man he was by abandoning me at the cabin.

Although, can I really blame him for that? I was the one who rejected him after all, wasn’t I?

God…

“Ehem. Book please.”

“Sorry,” I mutter, sliding another book toward my sister.

To my surprise, the stack of books was indeed enough to get everyone in line their copy. Once the last child has left, skipping off with their copy ofPetunia and the Wedding Party, Amy lets out a large sigh and leans back in her chair.

“Damn, I don’t know how you do it,” I mutter.

Fiona smiles and ruffles Amy’s hair. “She’s a professional, that’s how.”

Amy waves Fiona off and sighs. “I need coffee. And a pastry.”

“Gilly’s is right nearby, isn’t it?”

Amy smiles. “Perfect. Then you can tell me all about your trip and your time with Orlie.”

My face goes red. “Amy…”

“Don’t think we’re just going to gloss over it and pretend like it didn’t happen. Especially after the argument Hunter and I had over the matter.”

“Was it really that bad?”

“A lover’s quarrel. Besides, the make-up sex was worth it,” Amy says with a devilish grin.

My eyes bug out. “Amy, there are children nearby.”

“Oh, relax, they can’t hear me. Besides, since when did your ears burn over stuff like that?”

Since Orlie Wynters was inside me.“Amy, nothing happened with me and Orlie. We barely talked.”

“Uh-huh. Likely story.”

“Amy…” I say warningly.

She caps her sharpie and wiggles her fingers, knuckles cracking. “Just tell me what happened.”

“Nothing happened. And that’s the last I’ll say on the subject. Got it?”

Evidently, my words come out much more aggressive than I intended. Amy’s eyebrows jump and her eyes crinkle at the corners. The signature, “Ouch,” move from Amy.

“Sorry, that wasn’t supposed to be –”

“I won’t say another word about it, then,” she says and whisks off in the direction of the door.

That’s not the usual Amy way. Amy usually likes to niggle until you break down and tell her exactly what she wants to hear. She’s changed since being with Hunter. For the better in most ways, of course. And even more since becoming a mother to Jessica, the adoption papers having been signed just days after the wedding. Maybe she’s practicing not forcing things as much.

There’s a small part of me that wishes she had broken me down enough that I would be forced to tell her. Then I wouldn’t have to sit on this burning secret a second longer.

“Come on! Gilly’s closes in half an hour!” Amy cries out over her shoulder.
