This is going about as poorly as it could, save her forcing me to leave the room or spitting in my face. “Listen, I’m…” I draw a bit closer, glancing over my shoulder to make sure no one might be lingering in the hallway. “I’m sorry for how we left things. I was…”

“It was a mistake. We both knew that.”

Ouch. “Right. Well, that didn’t give me the right to act childish and not let you know I was going to leave. So, I apologize for that.”

Kira raises her eyebrows and then leans back in her chair. “Thank you.”

I clear my throat. My perfectly tailored suit suddenly feels way too tight. I undo the front button and take a deep breath. “Is it hot down here?”

“It’s always hot down here.”

“Really?”

Kira nods.

“Doesn’t heat rise?”

She blinks.

“I’ll have to get that checked out.”

“Orlie –”

“Before you ask me to leave –” I say, urgently throwing my hand out to stop her. “I want to clarify some things, alright? First and foremost, I don’t think you’re boring.”

“You already said that.”

Her lips perk for only a moment, but it’s enough to keep me going.

“Yes, well, it bears repeating. Furthermore, you’re incredibly important to Wynters Group and I want to make sure that you know that. Both professionally and –” My mouth gets dry. “Personally.”

Kira nods. “Thank you.”

I lower my voice. “And while what happened between us might have been out of the purview of professionalism, I don’t want that to impact how we move forward working together. If we can put our differences aside and continue to collaborate, I think we will be able to accomplish amazing things.”

Something tugs at my heartstring saying this. The entire time Kira’s been gone, I’ve been lamenting how she rebuffed me andhow I left with a broken heart. I’ve been turning over the idea of making amends. Face to face with her, though, that’s been made clear that not only is she not interested in such a thing, but it was a foolish thought to begin with.

I’ll move on.

However, I need to know that we can still remain loyal to one another. Professionally, that is.

“I hope I’ve made it clear that my work at Wynters is extremely valuable to me and I wouldn’t want to jeopardize my position for any reason whatsoever,” Kira says, eyes firmly in mine.

“Of course.”

“Your father was incredibly generous to take a chance on me.”

“It wasn’t a chance. Chance involves risk and there’s never been anything risky about having you on our team.”

Kira smiles.

I hold my hand out. “Truce, then?”

She takes my hand; I regret having initiated a handshake. My body feels so weak at her touch. I remember what it felt like to have her mouth all over me. Her hands. Her words in my ear. The way her pretty pink lips wrapped around the ‘o’ of my name.

I shake her hand firmly, then withdraw mine as quickly as possible, wiping off the sweat that accumulated in my palm. “Wonderful. Thank you, Kira.”

I turn on my heel and start to leave.
