“Here.” I go toward her and adjust the tresses of her hair. When I’m finished, I can’t help myself. I lean forward and kiss her forehead. “Perfect.”

Kira lets me linger that extra moment, her head tilting to the side in my hand.

I am so tired of denying myself. My whole life I’ve slaved away to become the CEO of Wynters. And now that it’s in my reach, it keeps being jerked away from me, like a horse tempted by a carrot. Why am I so obsessed with a job that will never love me back when I could have a woman who…

Don’t jump to conclusions, Orlie. You have no idea how she feels.

“We should do that again,” I say. “If you want.”

“Oh, I definitely want.”

That’s relieving.

Kira unwinds from my touch and goes toward the door. “I should get back to work.”

I sigh.

“Don’t look so disappointed,” she grins.

“I’m trying, but…”

“But…”

I give her a once over. Pretty Kira Solace with her secrets behind her eyes. God, I adore her.

“That was nice.”

“Really nice.”

“Yeah.”

She grabs the door handle and gives me one last glance. “I’ll see you soon.” The door shuts behind her.

I immediately collapse into my office chair and stare out the windows overlooking the Pacific, trying not to be all giggly and foolish. I can’t help it, though.

I wasn’t the only one who couldn’t resist.

Maybe we overthought this whole thing. There’s nothing in the employee handbook about workplace relationships, other than they need to be disclosed. I’m not usually the glass-half-full type, but we could be different for each other. I’m not the same as the men she’s had before. And I need to trust she’s not the same as the women who have hurt me.

This could be something.

In fact, it could be everything.

KIRA

“I swear to god,if you ask them to sing me happy birthday, I will flip out,” I whisper after the waitress walks away from taking our drink orders.

“They’re not going to sing you happy birthday,” Dana reassures me.

Harley and Amy exchange devilish grins.

“Then what are they smiling about?” I ask.

“They’re just smiling,” Gillian says and then thwaps Harley on the arm. “Right?”

“Right. I’m just really looking forward to the bottomless mimosas,” Harley says.
