I shake my head.

Dana sighs, the tray of food in her hands cooling off by the second. “Look, I came all the way up here –”

“No one asked you to.”

“Dadasked me to.”

I lift my head from my pillow. “Am I Dad? Does it look like I care?”

Dana doesn’t deserve my anger, not really. But no one in this family understands that wanting to be alone involves actuallybeingalone.

Dana puts the tray down on my desk and then sits on the edge of the bed. It creaks more under her weight than ever. “It might make you feel better. To eat.”

“It won’t.” Nothing will. In fact, eating might exacerbate things, considering there’s been an uptick in nausea the past few hours. Fuck, the morning sickness isn’t just in the morning.

Ever so softly, Dana runs her hand back through my hair. Feels nice. “You’re angry. I hear that. I don’t get it, but –“

“There’s nothing to get.” I bury my face further into the pillow.

“Okay. I won’t try.”

I smile. “You’ll make a good mom.”

Desperately, I’d love for her to say, “You too.” But she doesn’t know the circumstances I’m in. And I’m not about to tell her when everything is still so fresh. So uncertain.

“Thanks, Kira.”

“How’s patient zero?” Harley says from the doorway.

“God, you invited her too?” I growl and sit up in bed. I’m greeted by not just Harley, but also Gillian in the doorway. “You’ve got to be fucking –”

“Dad called us,” Gillian says firmly. “You know, we’re moms. We know things.”

“Can everyone stop pretending like they can help me? I don’t need to be mothered. I need to be left alone.”

Harley flits in and sits on the other side of me. “Yeesh, this is bad. There was a time when I was just like you, Kira. Not too long ago.”

“Oh god, don’t remind me…” Dana says quietly, remembering the time Harley did this exact same thing when she was hiding her pregnancy.

I’m annoyed by the fact I’m not even original. Just another Solace sister not wanting to eat and crying into her pillow because she’s hiding her pregnancy.

“So, what’s the secret, Kira? Spill it,” Harley says. “We’ll find out eventually.”

“I wouldn’t do that unless you want to get punched, Harl,” Gillian says.

I glare at Harley. “Listen to your sister, she knows what’s good for you.”

The corners of Harley’s mouth deepen in awkwardness, unsure what to do next.

As if on cue, Amy flies into the doorway. “I heard one of the Solace Sisters needs solidarity, so –”

“No. No fucking way,” I say. “Get out! Everyone get out!” I grab a pillow and swing it toward Gillian and Harley, purposefully leaving Dana out of the fray. “Get out, get out, get –”

“Okay, girls, I think she wants us to get out, so –” Dana starts shepherding my fleeing sisters out of the room. “Door closed or –‘”

“CLOSED. OBVIOUSLY.”

Dana gives me a sheepish smile before shutting the door quietly behind her.
