“Hey, I want to offer congratulations too!”

We all flip around to Dana and Drew. I fly to her side of the bed and rest my head on her shoulder. We both look into the face of her child as she strokes my hair. “It’s going to be great, Kiki. Really great.”

If my sisters all believe it, I will too.

I’m going to be a mom. And it’s going to be great.

“…andafter that, you have your three o’clock monthly standup with Wynters Singapore,” Quincy rattles off another meeting in a long string of meetings.

The two of us are walking at a steady clip down the hallway of the executive floor. For once in my tenure here, the hall is decorated for the holiday.

Halloween. I’ve never liked Halloween and I doubt anyone would be shocked to hear that.

There are black and orange garlands lining the walls, carved pumpkins from the pumpkin-carving contest starting to turn sallow, and ghosts pinned to the walls.

I knew I shouldn’t have let the event planning committee go overboard. But morale is up. And with today being Halloween, I pray the decorations will be thrown into the garbage promptly Monday morning.

Quincy and I are running late to lunch with a prospective client. Luckily, we already have a black car waiting to take us to the nicest restaurant in the area with a perfect view of the ocean. Fingers crossed the exec is already nursing a strong drink and will let us smooth over this little hiccup.

“Oh, and Trevor wanted me to let you know that you would be, in quote, ‘flying solo’ today at the Singapore standup,” Quincy says as we stop in front of the elevators.

I do a doubletake. “What?”

“He sent me an email last night. At three AM.” Quincy furrows his brow. “Is he okay?”

Dad has always gotten his best thinking done in the early morning hours. But that’s not the point. “He’s not joining me for the meeting?”

Quincy shakes his head and then presses the button for the elevator.

I’m so stunned I didn’t even manage to press it. Dad has been easing up his grip the past month and change. But to leave me with Wynters Singapore, arguably the most lucrative of our Wynters Group outposts, is a huge step.

In fact, I’d say it’s monumental.

“And don’t worry,” Quincy says as we step into the elevator. “I’ve already let them know you’re cutting your meeting fifteen minutes short in order to make it up to Silver Lake.”

I throw a questioning look at my assistant.

“The Seton Park District Grand Opening Halloween Bash?” Quincy asks, reading directly off his clipboard. “I didn’t come up with that, that was the title of the e-vite.”

“Shit,” I mutter. The Seton Park Grand Opening. Axel invited me over the phone a few weeks ago. I avoided an answer, telling him to send the invitation to my assistant. “You agreed to that?” I ask.

Quincy’s eyes widen. “Youagreed to it.”

“I most certainly did not.” I haven’t seen Kira Solace since I stormed out of her office. A lot has changed since then, namely that I found out my vasectomy did indeed come undone.

Which means it’s quite possible – no,likelythat Kira’s baby is mine.

I’ve known about this for a month. And I’m not sure how to proceed. Clearly, I owe Kira an apology. But every workday that passes, there’s still no sign of her. After the way we left things, I can’t imagine she’d want to hear from me.

However, that’s not the entire reason I’m keeping her at a distance.

I’m scared. I’ve been here before. And I don’t want to get hurt again.

Even if facing it head-on might make everything easier.
