“But like…Mom?” I can’t formulate a meaningful question to frame it.

From the look on Gillian’s face, though, I can see she gets it. “You’re not like Mom, Kira.”

“We don’t know that for sure.”

“You’re not like Mom.None of us are. Because all of us know what it’s like to lose that kind of love. And since we had each other, none of us will ever turn away from it. I promise you that your baby is –” Gillian’s lower lip trembles. “So lucky, Kiki.”

A couple more tears down my face.

“Please don’t question it. You’re meant for it. I promise.”

I wrap my arms around my sister, catching a whiff of the flowers in her hair. Lots of smells make me nauseous right now, but not this one. It’s comforting and safe.

“Also, I want to tell you something,” Gillian says.

“Do I smell?” I ask, flinching back. “I swear, I’m sweating like twice as much and I can’t seem to –”

Gillian throws her head back in laughter. “No. Not that at all.” She takes my hands. “Can’t tell anyone.”

“Promise, I’d never.”

Gillian and I are next to each other in the birth order and because of that, we have a special bond. I’ve never broken a promise to my older sister in my life.

She takes a deep breath and her smile curls to the side. “I’m pregnant too.”

“No.”

“Mhm!”

”No!”

“Shhhhh!”

I hug her again, tighter, and find myself hopping with her in a circle as I tearfully exclaim how excited I am that we get to be pregnant at the same time. I thought Amy and her were ridiculous for trying, but now that I’m living it for myself, I couldn’t be more excited.

“Oh, Gilly…” I push her hair out of her face, beaming from ear to ear. “I should have known. You’re glowing.”

My sister beams back at me, but before she can say anything, her eyes dart over my shoulder and her smile fades. “Oh, my god.”

“What? What’s wrong?” I turn around to look in the direction her eyes are facing and immediately realize her fears.

Orlie Wynters is standing in the doorway looking like a limp Ken doll in gym shorts. How is it that he can be in rumpled exercise clothes and still look amazing?

Our eyes meet for a brief second. He takes a step forward.

“Excuse me –” Dad barrels past me toward Orlie.

“Oh no,” Gillian and I say simultaneously.

Orlie takes a step back. Dad might not be nearly as tall as him, but he’s protecting what’s his. Orlie should be scared.

“Mr. Solace, I’m sorry for arriving unannounced, I was invited by – “

“I don’t care who invited you or when or what. I’ll give you the chance to leave only once.”

“Please, Mr. Solace, I know there’s a lot to explain and I don’t have a right to explain it, but –”

“No, I’m afraid –”
