By the time she arrived at Lux with Pedro, no matter what I said or wanted for her, mattered. She’d been in deep with that motherfucker, and I hated it for her. For six weeks, I watched her get paraded around. Pedro even offered her up to me, if I ever needed to “release a little steam.” Fact was, I looked at Hope as a little sister in need of some guidance. No way in hell I’d ever fuck her. Not that she didn’t have a tight fucking body and pretty tits.

She was a broken doll.

Hope needed someone to rescue her. Not take advantage of her too-sweet disposition.

Fuck.

Sometimes, I wished I could have saved her. Maybe, if I had given in to the temptation, I could have gotten her away. I wasn’t sure, but I knew the wives and girlfriends of theBroken Eagles MCcould figure it out. They all did some kind of charity work or whatever. Plus, Mack had people on speed dial. If she wanted out, I could’ve made it happen.

Cobicould’ve made it happen.

Every so often, when I thought about her too much, I could hear her soft voice asking the one question I wish I could have answered better. “Where can I go? This is all I know, Hunter.”

I should’ve been more commanding. More authoritative when I said, “Anywhere but here.” Instead, I whispered those words, and the welling of sadness consumed me. I had the chance to save one person, and she slipped away, determined to follow her man into the unknown sea that would always be their lives.

Mack Jr.’s soft coo, then sob, brought me back to reality.

“You can say that again,” I replied, rubbing his back. The car on the screen looked new, which meant it should have absorbed the impact. However, wrapping it around an offramp pole at a high rate of speed, not so much. That was not the way anyone should want to die. Especially not for boosting cars.

Placing Mack Jr. in his bounce seat, I put his bottle together for a mid-morning snack. Ireland was still on maternity leave and had a few appointments with Mack for the day, leaving the kid with me. I didn’t mind. We had guy bonding time.

“... The cause of the accident is still under investigation. From what little police are saying, the people in the vehicle had been staying at a local hotel. Police advise the community to avoid the area until their investigation is complete.” There was a quick shot of the hotel, and Hunter frowned. The place wasn’t far from Lux.

“See kid, never shit where you stay, got me?” I quirked a brow and Mack Jr. gave me a gummy smile before flapping his arms and legs, causing the seat to bounce up and down. “That’s what I thought too. We have a lot of work to do today, too. So, no slacking on this milk. Can’t get big and strong ifyouhalf-ass it.”

Mack Jr. giggled.

Best fucking sound ever.

If anyone outside of my family saw me having this conversation, I’d deny it. I had a reputation to uphold, and this... This would kill that surly rep. As it was, this kid had me wrapped around his little finger. Still seemed like a dream. Our sister had a kid and was married.

While Mack Jr. chugged down his milk, I drank my coffee, watching the rest of the news. The wreck stuck with me even as I changed his diaper and got ready to go. We still needed to paint the Maverick and put new tires on before I’d have it street worthy. Having a nephew changed priorities for me. Couldn’t put a car seat on a motorcycle. So, I took one of the salvage cars Cobi bought with county money, paid him back, and got to work.

Mack Jr. and I decided on candy apple red for the exterior, with black leather for the interior. The soft top was also getting an upgrade. Engine wise, we were taking her to a whole new level. Standard Mavericks came with a 302 engine. Best engine Ford ever made, but we were beefing her up. We’d start with a new intake manifold, change out the carburetor, and an MSD ignition. 302’s were easy to work on and tinker with power wise. Then, once we made the first set of upgrades, we’d change the cylinder heads and add a high-performance camshaft and change out her timing system just to add a little stability. When my baby hit the streets, she’d be a whole new car.

He'd be the coolest little dude hitchin’ a ride to preschool.

As I cleaned up our breakfast, a knock came at the door, giving me pause. I glanced at Mack Jr, who gave me the suspicious stink eye. Or it could have been gas. Then he gurgled. Probably gas. Or a shitty diaper. I picked him up and did the sniff test as the knock came again. Not a shitty diaper. We were safe. For now. The knock came again, and I sighed. Some people were just impatient fucks.

Guess I should be happy they weren’t fucking with the doorbell.

“Hold your shit,” I yelled, rubbing Mack Jr.’s back as he snacked on his fist. Little dude was going to eat me out of house and home.

Opening the door, the air was snatched from my body.Boom.A woman with curves in all the right places stood before me, with long, unruly curly blonde hair. Big, beautiful blue eyes and full lush lips. I wondered how they’d feel like wrapped around my dick. Speaking of which, the aforementioned appendage thickened to the point of pain, pressing against the zipper of my jeans, cutting a track into the length. There was a dusting of freckles across the bridge of her nose and fuck me if she didn’t steal my soul with her bright smile. This woman, I didn’t know who she was or why she stood on my doorstep, but I was happy she was there because she was mine. Until I saw the baby carrier in her right hand and focused on the notebook in her left.

The fuck?

I glanced at her perfect handful tits and saw her name tag,Posey Roberts. Damn, even her name had a nice, cutesy ring to it. Then I read the rest of it.Department of Children’s Resources–Davidson County.“Hi, does a Hunter Banks live at this address?”

I glanced from her to the baby in the carrier and back to the woman I’d rather be fucking than standing on my porch talking to. “That’s me.”

She exhaled. Her expression filled with disappointment. Like she regrated coming to my door. What the fuck could I have done to make her see me in such a light? “Great. Well, could I come in? I don’t think you want your neighbors to hear our conversation.”

Our conversation? “Sure. Who’s the kid?” I lifted my chin in the baby girl’s direction.

She rolled her eyes and gave me a duh look, like I was supposed to recognize her or some shit. Sucked to be Posey, I had no clue what the fuck was going on. “I’ll explain once we’re inside.” The air of authority in her voice only turned me on more. I’d love to fuck the snippiness out of her.

“Sure. Let me put little dude down in his playpen. Would you like some coffee?” I needed a moment to gather my wits. This woman knocked me off my game, left my head spinning. She irritated the fuck out of me because she’d seen me as an asshole without even knowing me. Not saying I wasn’t. I was one of the biggest assholes around, but how the fuck was she going to step into my house with all her preconceived notions?
