I fumbled my purse, dropping it, and spilling the contents out onto the floor. Hunter chuckled before squatting down to help me shove everything back in. “Damn it.”

“What were you thinking about when you dropped your purse, Baby girl?” Hunter asked. His voice was hypnotic when he stepped back to give me a second to right everything. “Tell me.”

This was a test. He was waiting to see how I’d react to his need to dominate and be a possessive man. I straightened my shoulders, staring him in the eyes as I explained in vivid details what I wanted to see and what I wanted him to do to me. “I imagined you jerking off in front of me, coming on my stomach and breasts. Then I thought about you shoving your dick down my throat. I wondered what you sounded like when you came. Also, what it would feel like to have you inside of me. How far you’d stretch me...”

Hunter’s eyes widened as his nostrils flared and his mouth flattened with determination. A small shudder worked through him, but he recovered quickly, crooking his finger at me. When I didn’t immediately respond, he snapped, “Come here.”

I closed the distance between us. His hazel-green eyes ate me up when I stepped closer to him. “I’m ready now.” I didn’t mean the double entendre. Intension or not, the heated expression on Hunter’s face left me off balanced. “Good girls always get rewarded.”

Hunter took my keys from my fingers and locked the door behind us before placing them back into my purse. I stared after him, unable to find my words or coordination to move. What the fuck just happened?

“You good?” He quirked a brow.

I swallow hard and smiled. “I’m perfect.”

He placed his hand on my lower back as we exited the building. The warmth in his palm centered me, pushing back some of the floaty feeling filling my fried brain. “Then let’s go.”

The drive toFlamewas short, but fun. Hunter had an eclectic taste in music. Everything from eighties metal to punk, grunge, and nu metal, whatever that was. However, we had one love in common. The Foo Fighters.

“Who’s better? Nirvana or Foo Fighters?” I asked, rocking in my seat as Dave’s voice blared from the speakers of Hunter’s car.

“Is this a make-or-break it question? Like if I say the wrong band, you’re done with me?” he teased.

I laughed. “No. Inquiring minds want to know.” I lay my hand on my chest. “I’m not judging your musical choices. Just curious.”

Hunter glanced at me, then back to the road. He licked his full bottom lip before he replied, “I’m a Grohl fan. You?”

“I’m a fan of Foo Fighters and Nirvana. Heart-Shaped Box...Everything.I saw Foo Fighters in 2019 at the Pilgrimage Fest,” I said. “Fricken Amazing.”

“Last time I saw them was in ’14 at the Ryman Auditorium.”

“Wasn’t that the surprise Halloween show they did?”

He chuckled and then nodded. “So, you weren’t pulling my leg. You know your Foo history.”

“Or more like I remember finding out they were coming and tried to scheme my way into the show without my shitty foster family knowing. Lucy—we went to high school together, couldn’t sneak out, and I didn’t want to go alone.” I shrugged.

Hunter flicked on his blinker before coming to a stop at the red light. “I’m glad to hear you didn’t go by yourself. It was even crazier than normal, thanks to it being Halloween. Crazy night doesn’t even describe what happened there.” The light turned green, and he turned his attention back to driving. “Tell you what. If I hear of them coming back, I’ll snag us tickets.”

Did he just make plans with me? In the future?I wanted to squeal in delight, but I didn’t. Instead, I tried to play it off. All calm, cool, and collected like. “Sounds like a plan.”

Hunter parked the car. “Stay there.” He slid from the driver’s side seat and made his way around to my door. One day, when I had more confidence in myself, I’d disregard his requests, just to see what would happen. He opened the door and held his hand out to me, and I graciously accepted.

“I never asked where Destiny was for the night.”

He stopped at the entrance ofFlame. “Are you my case working tonight or my date?”

Good question. I thought about it for a second before responding. “Your date.”

Hunter had to stop smiling at me. Otherwise, I was going to end up as a puddle of goo at his feet. “Good answer.” He pulled open the door and gesturing for me to step in first. As I strolled past him, he said, “Destiny is with Ireland and Mack. They have graciously agreed to keep her overnight for me.”

As we walked up to the hostess station, Hunter was right behind me, keeping his body close, protective even.

“Hey, Hunter,” the hostess called out, and I felt my stomach drop and wondered at her familiarity with him. Had he slept with her? “Mack told me to be on the lookout for you. We have your table all set up how you asked.”

“Thanks, Marabella. How’s your brother’s car holding up?”

“He hasn’t crashed it yet,” she responded with a shrug. “So, I guess that counts as a win.”
