“No can do, ma’am. General is closer, and that’s where we have to take you based on protocol,” someone replies.

“I guess if that’s what you have to do,” she utters as though the effort to deal with this is just simply too much for her right now.

“Hand the man speaking your phone, Alexis.”

“Okay,” she says, somewhat tentatively.

“This is Sheldon Mathews. Who am I speaking with?

“One of the EMTs with Life First Ambulance services,” the man answers.

“Ms. Barrington would like to be taken to Central.”

“Mister, I’d like to help, but we have a standard method for dividing patients when the hospitals are close in proximity to the patient, and she’s supposed to go to General.”

“Look, I’m not sure if you heard me the first time. I want her taken to Central. In this state, the patient has the right to select where they go if it can be done safely. If I need to talk to your boss, I will, but we’re wasting valuable time.”

There’s an exaggerated sigh and a short pause. “I’ll call in the change.”

“Thank you. Now if you could place Alexis back on the line, I would appreciate it.”

“I’ll hand her the phone while we’re getting her into the ambulance. Central is about eleven minutes out with traffic,” the man states.

I wait while people talk in the background and she’s moved to the ambulance. There are a few moments of silence before I hear her voice. “I’m in the ambulance with the EMTs, and Nick is with me. Thanks for dealing with the other guy.”

She’s thanking me for intervening and taking care of her. I imagine her blushing at me with pinkened cheeks the way she has before, and it causes my chest to pump and my cock to swell. “You’re welcome, Alexis. We’re about to land, and I have things to take care of, but Nick will keep me updated.”

“You said there would be consequences if I don’t do what you say. Does that mean I’ll see you again?”

Chapter Four

Alexis

The line is quiet, almost eerily silent, leaving me to believe that Sheldon has hung up on me, and if so, I wouldn’t really blame him. It hasn’t even been a full day, and he’s had to deal with more than enough drama, but that didn’t stop me from unashamedly flirting or from wanting to hear his voice. “Sheldon?”

“Do what the doctors and nurses tell you, and stay safe. I’ll have Nick call your friend Allie and let her know that you’re on the way to the hospital. I don’t want her to see your name on an incoming report and get worried,” Sheldon remarks.

I feel embarrassed that I didn’t think to call her myself, but my head is throbbing so badly that all I want to do is sleep. “Thank you. I know she would be absolutely terrified if that happened.”

I close my eyes briefly, but someone shakes my shoulder. I drag my eyes open, and Nick’s looking down at me, talking. “Let’s try to stay awake until we get you checked out in the ER, okay?” he directs, taking my phone and scrolling through my contacts.

“Why don’t we call Allie and let her know what’s going on, alright?”

I nod in agreement but cringe with the movement. “You, okay?” Nick asks.

“Think so, but everything hurts right now, especially my head.”

He nods, and I don’t miss the look of concern he passes the EMT standing on the other side of me, who already has me hooked up to an IV.

Nick takes my cell and scrolls through my contacts, selecting Allie’s name and patiently waiting until she answers. “Hello, this is Nick Montgomery. I’m calling for your friend Alexis. She was in a car accident. She’s conscious, breathing on her own, and doesn’t appear to have any breaks, but she got knocked unconscious by the air bag. We’re in the ambulance right now and heading to Central Hospital. I understand you work there and wanted to let you know.”

I hear Allie’s animated voice and smile, listening to her ramble a million miles a minute to Nick, who seems to take it all in good stride. “Don’t worry, Allie. We should arrive shortly. In fact, I think we’re right around the corner. We’ll see you in a few moments,” he responds before disconnecting and handing my phone back to me.

“She’s going to meet you in the emergency room and doesn’t want you to sleep either. See, I know a few things about medicine,” Nick states, winking at me.

The EMTs let Nick get out before wheeling my gurney toward the entrance. We haven’t yet entered the hospital when Allie greets us, taking my hand and firing questions at the EMTs as fast as they can answer the last. The chatter makes my head hurt, and I close my lids, attempting to blind out the pain behind my eyes.

“Lexie, listen to me. Stay awake. Open your eyes and look at me,” Allie instructs, and the orderlies wheel me into the hospital and down a long corridor toward a set of double doors that say ER in red.
