“I did, but that’s no excuse. I tried to find you and apologize. It was…”Explosive, the most intimate night of my life. “I never forgot you.”

No one I’d been with since had ever compared. No one else had ever taken my knot. My cock was getting hard just thinking about it.

“I didn’t forget you, either.” She said it quietly, like a confession. I’d never felt more ashamed about walking away. “But here we are now, so let’s talk.” Her chin was raised in challenge.

No way was I going to lose her again. I grinned. “Do you still like reading sci-fi?”

That earned me a surprised laugh, and the mood at the table shifted a little.

“I do. It’s my favorite genre. That might have been the perfect thing to ask me.”

I wanted to ask if I’d hurt her by leaving, but there was nothing to be gained from opening old wounds. I’d gone back to that little college town a couple of weeks later, hoping to find her, but she’d already graduated and moved away. Regret had eaten me alive.

I’d rationalized my actions by reminding myself that she was a beta. Whatever attachment I felt wouldn’t last in the long run, and she was better off. Now that I knew she was an omega… No, I couldn’t ask her about it now, not if I wanted a chance with her.

And I did. Jonah and Toby seemed to be on the same page.

Toby asked about her favorite authors, while Jonah made sure she ate. We all liked the same sci-fi series that was streaming right now, and I suggested she come over to our place to watch the next episode the following Wednesday night.

Sylvie looked over at Luke with an eyebrow raised in question. His face was blank. Even I couldn’t get a read on him.

“I usually go to a climbing gym on Wednesdays,” Luke said. “But you should come over anyway.”

She looked doubtful.

Jonah was holding her hand, and he brought her knuckles to his mouth for a kiss. “Please come, Sylvie.”

She stared at Jonah for a long moment before nodding. “Okay, I’ll come.”

Thank god.

Then the topic turned to her job at an art gallery that helped kids in high school and college get their start. It was perfect for her, and I could see how much she cared about it. She lit up when she talked about the art and the young artists. The fact that Jonah was an artist, had gone to her gallery, was more than a coincidence. It was fate.

Sylvie Cleese… Wait…“Are you Kat’s sister?”

Her cheeks flushed. “Yes. You were at her pack’s party earlier, weren’t you?”

“I was. You were there?” She nodded, and I mentally cringed. I hadn’t noticed her there. “I work with Eric, one of her packmates.”

Eric worked long hours, and I often wondered if something was going on at home, but I filed that away for another time. I knew from him that the Cleeses owned several department stores across the metro area. Today was the first time I’d met his omega, though. She’d seemed sweet, if a little quiet. Her sister.Again, it felt like fate was nudging us together.

After another hour, Sylvie looked at her watch and said she needed to get home, so we all walked her back to her car. I opened my arms for a hug, and she didn’t hesitate. She stepped into me and hugged me back. Feeling her body against mine soothed me like a balm and brought a jolt of lust at the same time.

Sylvie tucked her nose into my neck, and I knew she was getting a hit off my scent. I had worried initially when Toby mentioned that she didn’t have her own. But now, and in hindsight, I realized how little it mattered. My reaction to her was on a deeper level than scents. My soul knew hers.

When she stepped out of my arms, Luke shook her hand. Then Toby got his own hug. His hands slid a bit lower on her back, pushing her against him, and she wrapped her arms around his neck. I smiled. I’d never seen him be that forward, and she was melting into him.

Jonah didn’t mess around. As soon as Toby let go, he had a hand around her nape and another around her waist, and he brushed his lips against hers. Then he buried his nose into her neck and kissed her there, making her shiver.

I searched inside myself for jealousy, but it wasn’t there. It didn’t matter who kissed her now. If she accepted Jonah, it was likely that eventually she’d accept us all. Still, I wanted to feel the heat of her mouth on mine more than I wanted my next breath.

As I looked at her, I felt hopeful. For the first time in my life, I allowed myself to imagine sharing my secrets with someone. With her. I could let her see the side of me I carefully hid away under the confident alpha swagger. She could know me.

The idea of having her at our house, showing her our space… There was arightnessto it. We needed to take a look at the nest, get everything ready for her to see. Edward was the last one to work on it. No one had been in there in a year.

Damn. Edward would have loved her.

After she drove away, the four of us looked at one another. I turned to Jonah first.
