“I’m starting to feel like a revolving door,” Bobby said, turning to face Marcus again.

“You can leave,” Marcus said.

“Are you sure?” Bobby asked.

“This is a personal matter now,” Marcus said.

“Fen, will you be okay if I leave?” Bobby asked, turning to face us again.

My wolf threw himself against my ribs wanting to get to Fen and to Marcus. He was going to tear me to shreds if something didn’t give soon.

“Ummmm…. Yeah. Unless you know something, I don’t,” Fen said.

“We’ll see you later, Bobby,” Marcus said, standing up. “Irwin, are you okay to bring our guest inside?”

“Sure,” I nodded and looked to Fen. “I’m so sorry this is complicated. We’ll explain everything as soon as we sit down. I promise. I am an omega. I am mated, but--- shit, it’s complicated.”

“One question before we go in there,” Fen said.

“Okay,” I said, reaching my hand out for him.

“You feel this too, right? I can handle strange. I can’t handle crazy. I’ve had enough crazy in my life. If I’m the only one who feels this, just send me off to the mental health clinic on Hemlock Mountain.”

“I feel it too. So does Marcus,” I nodded.

Fen took my hand, and I led him inside the office and shut the door behind us leaving Bobby behind on the other side to fill in the blanks for himself.

Chapter Five

Fen

Once Irwin’s palm was pressed against mine, I would’ve followed him willingly on a long walk off a short cliff. I didn’t want to let go of him and that went against every personal motto I had. I didn’t get close to people. I tried my best not to make friends. Everyone wanted something or needed something and usually those things were stuff I wasn’t willing to give up. Everyone back home knew I was born because of Bram Valen’s madness and had inherited a sizable sum of money. Lots of people wanted that. I was willing to share, but not with crooks and con artists. Only, I’d contacted Irwin. I wanted him to write my story. When I read his first novel, the telling of the life and death of his best friend’s mother, I cried all weekend. I couldn’t stop crying. He’d brought them to life from beyond the door of life and death. I never knew my parents and I wanted more than anything to be able to picture their lives in my head. Irwin was the only one who could do that for me. That’s why I came to Heartville.

Only now, with his fingers entwined through mine, I didn’t want to talk about my parents. I wanted to push him up against the wall and kiss him until we merged into a single being. I wanted to kiss him until who we were and where we came from disappeared.

“Alpha,” Irwin said to the man behind the desk, breaking my concentration. “Maybe we should move to the sofa and chairs? A desk feels ---” He stopped to search for his words. “Too impersonal,” he finally settled on.

“Okay,” the man nodded.

“This is Marcus. You’ve seen him a few times in the background of our video chats,” Irwin said. “He’s my Alpha mate. He’s not normally this moody. This is just an unusual situation for us all.”

Marcus sat down in a green plaid armchair and Irwin frowned. I wanted to kick him for making that expression cross Irwin’s face. I shouldn’t have felt that way. I shouldn’t feel anything about Irwin this way. He was an omega.

“HE’S OURS!”My wolf growled into my thoughts.

“Ummm… Actually, I think he’s Marcus’s,”I told him, but the words tasted like a bitter lie on my tongue.

“Alpha, will you sit on the sofa with us? I’ll sit in the middle. I don’t mind,” Irwin said, managing a nervous smile.

A second later, we were all on the sofa. No one said anything for a long time but I held onto Irwin’s hand like he might fade out of existence.

“What is going on?”My wolf whispered into my thoughts as if he was afraid the others might overhear him.

I had no fucking clue.

“Maybe I should take a shower while you explain,” Marcus said. “It’ll probably sound better coming from you anyway. Then I could get Dara, because we’ll need---”

“No,” Irwin said, his voice steady but firm. “You’re not leaving me alone to do this.”
