Page 6 of Cursed By the Veil

It couldn't be her human friend, could it? They couldn't have both emerged from the veil on the same day, that would be too much of a coincidence, right? Unless the bond between them was much stronger than I realized. Was that even possible though? A bond between two beings, fae and human, that was strong enough to pull one another through the veil?

Chapter

Senara

As soon as I'd seen the red hair I wanted to run to her, but as I pushed to my feet someone grabbed me.

"Let us confirm that it's actually her first." Ronan's words were quiet enough that I knew there was no way Wyn could have heard him. There was something in his voice that had me turning to look at him and the grip he had on my shoulder was tighter than I would have expected for someone just trying to slow the other person down. It was like he was trying to keep himself in place as well.

"Who else would answer to that name?" I asked in surprise. "It's not like it was a common name, especially not for fae, at least to my knowledge." Ronan just cocked an eyebrow at me. I was in unfamiliar lands, ones that had magic that could do who knows what, so I gave in. "Fine. Go and make sure it's her."

"Thank you." Ronan's words surprised me, doubly so when I realized it was him who was going out toward my friend and I had no doubt that it was her. I had expected Thorn to go too, but he just stayed just in front of me, ready to take me and run should the need arise, or at the very least protect me.

We still needed to have a good talk about what was going on. I assumed we would get there eventually, but maybe now with Wyn here as well I could find out for sure what was happening, why he had pushed us into the veil. Well, I knew why. But what did we do now?

"All clear." Ronan called back to us.

I looked at Thorn and he gave me a nod. He had barely even finished moving his head before I was moving, running towards my friend. I covered the distance between us more rapidly than I expected and watched as Wyn did the same and the two of us met in a tangle of arms after running towards each other.

"I can't believe you're alive!" I gushed as I wrapped my arms around her.

For just a moment I was surprised by how small she felt in my arms. She hadn't always been so tiny, had she? I pushed the thought aside, and focused on the face that she was right there in front of me, not dead like they'd suspected.

No one knew each other like Wyn and I did. We were closer than friends, and I'd say more than sisters too. We were family on a whole other level. Some of the reasoning behind that was kind of depressing, so I didn't think about it much. But nonetheless, I was grateful to have her, more so than ever before now.

"Same could be said for you. I thought I was going to be on my own," Wyn replied with a slight tremble to her voice.

"Fat chance of that. You can't get rid of me that easy." Her cheek moved against me and I knew, or at least hoped that she was smiling. It was the sniffle in my ear that let me know tears were spilling down our faces in equal measure.

The last thing I wanted to do was go through whatever was happening by myself or for her to be left alone either in the human lands or in the veil. It didn't help that even though I had trusted Thorn I was now wary of him, doubly so when Isaw the looks that Ronan was giving him and realized there was something that he wasn't telling me. I let it go for now. But sooner rather than later, he would have to spill the beans. There was only so long I was willing to stay in the dark.

When I finally pulled back long enough to take her in, I could see that she was wearing a makeshift outfit of some sort, as though she had been out of the veil for longer than I had, which would be a surprise.

"I didn't realize you were so into fashion," I teased as I looked at her leaf underwear. I needed some levity after the emotional ups and downs of thinking she was dead and then her turning up alive as though summoned by our thoughts.

"Very funny," she replied.

Ronan was there, taking off the same coat he'd offered me and holding it out for her. She wrapped it securely around herself, seeming relieved to have that level of protection once more.

"Thank you," she said softly.

Ronan just nodded. I didn't miss the fact that he couldn't keep his eyes off my friend either. I wasn't sure whether he was just being overly cautious or if there was something else brewing there. Something that I wouldn't stand in the way of should it go that route. Honestly, I wasn't sure Wyn had ever been in a relationship before, so it would be a first for her, but I was getting ahead of myself.

We walked back towards the camp, arm in arm, still unwilling to let go of one another. To my surprise, Thorn made space and gestured for her to sit by the fire.

Ronan was the one that spoke first, giving her a warm smile as he said, "I'm glad to see you survived."

A flush stained her cheeks. "Thank you. I didn't expect to."

"Neither of us did," I said quietly, glaring at Thorn. When I had first seen him, I had been so relieved, so glad that Iwasn't alone that the anger I had been feeling towards him had dissipated momentarily. Now, after seeing Wyn and how she had obviously come out of the veil before I had and had had to scrounge for clothes and probably food without knowing where she was or having anyone around to help, my anger came back tenfold.

What I didn't understand was why he hadn't just told us. If he had said, hey, by the way, we're fae and so are you, and we'll save you by pushing you into the veil.I...probably would have called him a liar and tried to kill him. Yeah, okay. I can see why he didn't tell us. Still, nobody got away with treating my sister that way.

Ronan spun around and dug through his pack. For the first time I noticed that there were a few of them laying around on the forest floor. "I have something that you can wear if you want. Unless you've discovered that leaves are your personal style, in which case I respect that." He offered some fabric to Wyn, which she took with a grateful nod before disappearing behind some trees and bushes. When she came back she handed her leaf bra and skirt to me as though I needed them for some reason. I was naked under the coat, so maybe I did.

I was impressed with her craftsmanship as I looked over the leaves while we both sat next to the fire. The warm flames flickering, making shadows against the trees across from us. I couldn't help but look at my sister with awe as I tried to process everything we'd just been through.
