“Okay, okay. So,Dr. Willinger, what you’re not understanding is that I’m not picking up this option. There are better options. There are better situations. And my car is back on campus, so maybe you could?—”

I listened to her yammering all the way up to one of the bedrooms. I chose one at random. It didn’t seem dusty, it had a bathroom, I thought it was fine for whatever time we’d keep her here. “You’re not going anywhere. If you need anything, text this number. Do not call.Text.” I passed her a business card out of my wallet. I didn’t want to hear her voice, because whatever I heard, my cock also heard.

I looked at her eyes—fuck, they were fucking beautiful—and said very firmly, “Do not leave. Security is out, and I can’t vouch for your safety yet, but I’ll let you know when I can. Hopefully we’ll figure out your passport situation soon and you’ll be able to leave.”

“But—”

“The only thing I want to hear you say is, “I’m not going anywhere without your say-so, Dr. Willenger,” I prompted pedantically.

She gave me a long-suffering look, and I leaned down to her level and put my hand to my ear.

She groaned, “I’m not going anywhere without your say-so, Dr. Willenger.”

“Good girl,” I told her, and my cock jumped, because that was what my cock wanted me to say when she took my cock inside her little pussy. My brain assured my cock that would not be happening, but my cock had high hopes that it wasn’t interested in relinquishing just yet.

I straightened, almost feeling my cock begin to start taking control of my brain. “I’m going. Have a nice evening.”

I turned and could almost feel her flipping me off behind my back. If she was a mate I was keeping, I would make her toe the fucking line without sass. As it was, though, I didn’t have to care about training my mate, because I wasn’t keeping her.

I locked the door, keeping her in her room.

Caelum and I were going to find our way out of this hell.

CHAPTER 6

Caelum

As soon as Ry came into my room, I could tell he wanted to throw someone. Rog could tell too, so he immediately left the room like he had business elsewhere. He had been playing nursemaid to me since he found me on the floor of my office.

“What’d you do with her?” I asked, hoping he wouldn’t say that he’d put Kaci in a box and put that box in a hole in the ground somewhere.

“I stuck her up in the mansion,” Ry snapped. He looked like shit. He still appeared somewhat groomed, but his eyes told another story. He had been fighting with his lust demons all day. Hell, I’d spent twenty minutes in the office with her, and if my heart hadn’t felt like it was going to explode, I’d had plans to jack off afterwards. “Please tell me you had a heart-attack.”

I gave him a suffering look. “I wish it was that simple. Where were you when I called?”

“About twenty miles shy of N’Orleans,” Ry told me, crossing his arms in front of his massive chest, probably so he didn’t risk punching me. He looked like he wanted to strangle someone.

I wiped my hand over my face. If this was the mating bond, and it was distance that triggered it… then that wasn’t a very great distance. “Fuck.”

“Did it come on gradually?” he asked.

“No, not at all. I was celebrating with myself, in fact, and all of the sudden I felt like I was dying,” I told him, shaking my head at the memory. I pulled down my shirt collar until he could see over my heart, where the once black bruise was now a mean red. “That was back about two hours ago. Still hurts like hell.”

He leaned towards it, inspecting. “That’s crazy. I’ve never heard of such a thing. Well, not inmodern times. I mean, this is shitmaw-mawmight have talked about.” He waved his hand at the fading mark and paced to the window. “I’ve known men to literally travel anywhere and just act a little weird. Maybe a lot weird. Maybe a little uncomfortable under their skin; like an itch you can’t scratch. But this is strong. How are you gonna deal with this? If she’s tied to you this bad, then I don’t know how?—”

“Why do you think this ismyproblem? She’s your mate, too!” I reminded him, swiping my hand through the air.

He shrugged and shook his head. “You’re pure-bred. I have human-born in me. That has to be it. There aren’t many pure breeds around. Maybe that’s why it barely happens anymore.”

I hadn’t thought about it that way, but maybe he was right. I took a deep breath. “There’s about a million things we have to figure out, Ry. This situation isn’t going to be easy.”

“It’s not easy on mydick. We have to get her out of here. Her scent’s all over my clothes,” he said, like this was a bad thing. It was the best smell in the world. But I guess that was the problem.

“The most important thing is we don’t mark her. If we mark her, we change her. There’s no going back from that. She won’t be human,” I begin.

“No fucking shit,” Ry replied, glancing back at me. “And I want to get to the bottom of how this fucking happened. It wasn’t gradual, Caelum. Everything was fine last week, and then all of the sudden, she’s making my dick punch a hole in my fucking pants. There has to be something behind it.”

“You mean…” Magic. I didn’t say it because I hated saying it. I hated magic, I hated how unnatural it was, and how little could be done about it. But it felt like that was what was happening.
