“With her blood, the pack will be invincible!” one of them said. Thankfully, their conversation had turned away from what they were going to do to my unwilling body.

The other man responded, his voice equally eager, “Imagine the army we can amass, the territories we can conquer. We’ll be unstoppable.”

I watched as two of them began to distance themselves from the others. Soon enough, they disappeared from view, leaving the two remaining men to discuss exactly what they would do with their upcoming power that would come from bleeding me dry.

They didn’t seem to be moving. Their conversation turned jovial, and the clinking of glasses indicated that they were indulging in a celebratory drink.

“Here’s to our future power,” one of them exclaimed, raising a glass.

The other man chimed in, a sly smile in his voice. “And to the reign of our pack as the alpha of alphas.”

They were sure counting their chickens before the eggs were even laid, let alone hatched.

Idiots.

“Fuck, this shit is strong,” one of them said, his voice hoarse as he struggled with the burn from whatever liquor they were drinking. I waited a while longer until one of them was snoring and the other was groaning with heartburn. Now was my moment.

I closed my eyes and prayed for luck. I fucking needed it.

In silence, I reached for the door, its old hinges creaking ever so slightly as I pushed it open. The two men were engrossed in their revelry, their backs to the door, and they didn’t suspect a thing.

As I stepped into the corridor, I spotted the drunken man stumbling in front of the door. His back was turned, and I seized the opportunity. Gripping the sharpened chair leg, I swung it with every bit of my strength, striking him on the head. Caughtcompletely off guard, his eyes widened and rolled back in his head before he crumpled to the floor, unconscious.

The other man’s snores stopped short as he startled awake at the loud sound. For a second, we stared into each other’s eyes, like he was trying to figure out how the fuck I’d managed to knock his buddy out. But then he realized it didn’t matter.

With a crazed expression, he reached for his belt and pulled out a switchblade. He flicked it open and lunged at me, slashing wildly. My instincts kicked in, and I dodged the first few frenzied strikes, my heart pounding in my chest.

His blade caught the edge of my shirt and grazed against my stomach, but it didn’t break the skin. He stared in disbelief, momentarily shocked by the lack of blood. Seizing the opening, I lunged forward, slamming the chair leg against his temple. He collapsed to the floor, just like his companion.

Breathing heavily, I took a moment to collect myself, the adrenaline still vibrating through my veins. My chest rose and fell with the exertion of the fight, but I didn’t let myself stay there long. I knew I needed to move.

I looked around, finding myself at the end of a long hallway in what appeared to be some kind of old administrative building. There were windows to my left, their glass panes dusty and cracked, and a string of closed doors to my right, their paint peeling and their handles worn.

The whole place was pretty run down.

The walls were marked with a lot of intricate graffiti as well as with water stains, evidence of a leaky roof. The ceiling sagged in places, and the floors beneath my feet groaned with each step as I slunk forward.

I crept towards the windows, where I saw that I was up on the second floor. At the end of the hallway, there was a window that had been broken, and the warm bayou breeze streamed in through the shards of glass.

Fuck. It felt like a little piece of home.

Cautiously, I slipped through the shattered window and found myself on a narrow ledge that clung precariously to the building’s exterior. The aged bricks and peeling paint under my fingertips offered little comfort as I inched along the side of the structure, my heart racing.

I moved with the stealth of a shadow. The night air brushed against my skin, and the sound of my own breathing was the only company I had.

As I crept along the narrow ledge, the once-sturdy bricks crumbled beneath my feet. My heart pounded in my chest as I balanced on the edge, knowing I had to make each step count.

Then an absolute fucking disaster happened.

A brick disintegrated beneath my foot, and I felt myself plummeting. Panic surged through me as I grasped frantically at the edge, my fingertips barely catching the crumbling brickwork. I dangled there, just inches from falling.

At that very moment, a group of men walked by, their voices echoing up to me. The sweat on my brow mixed with the dust of the crumbling ledge, and I clung to the edge, praying they wouldn’t look in my direction.

They chatted and laughed, their footsteps clipping against the sidewalk nearby. Thankfully, the men continued on their way, oblivious to the perilous scene just above them.

With relief washing over me, I let go and dropped to the ground with a quiet huff, my heart still racing. The impact jarred my knees, and I knelt down in a crouch, catching my breath for the briefest of seconds.

“Going somewhere?”
