Ry and Caelum seemed like they were going to be my loyal bodyguards for a moment, but as soon as we got close to Juana, they both found the alpha and beta of the rogue pack who were coming back for round two. Caelum was attacked from the left out of nowhere and yelped as he was heaved right, and Ry immediately attacked the alpha, who was the size of a VW bug, and I don’t think I’m exaggerating much.

Let me paint the scene: wolves flying everywhere, lots of fur. Ceiling was falling to bits, floorboards popping up and rolling across the ground, I got plaster in one of my eyes right away, and it stung, I could barely smell anything at all because it was so fucking dusty.

Did I also mention it was dark? Well, it was. As soon as the earthquakes started, the lights stopped, and so it was so black that if I was in my human form, I’d be worthless.

As it was, I could see plenty. It was all shades of green, like I was wearing night vision goggles. So, everything—the wolves, Juana, the floors and ceilings (all where floors and ceilings shouldn’t be), dust, and all the broken furniture and shit—that was all one color.

I was already not liking this scene. Green was not my favorite color. It was not the only color I wanted to see upon my untimely demise, so failure was not an option.

I saw a wolf coming, apparently a third guard for Juana, but this wolf couldn’t quite hurdle like I could. In a way that would have made my old coach cream his panties, I wolf-hurdled a huge Lycan like he was standing in the way between me and a free cellphone.

Juana’s eyes widened, and she put up her hands.

I stopped, skidding across the floor because I felt like my legs were suddenly a million pounds and stuck to the floor like magnets.

This wasn’tideal…

“It doesn’t have to be this way,” Juana informed me, fixing her hair—because you know, it got some plaster in it. “I don’t want to kill you. We came over to talk negotiations.”

With a small wolf army? My ass. You were coming to demand submission,my wolf snorted, because she was apparently very good at picking up on sus behavior, and she wasn’t falling for it.

“I know what negotiations you want,” I growled. I felt like I had to struggle to say anything. It was like talking with my mouth taped. When the guys talked about their wolves, I was beginning to realize what they were talking about—the wolf had very little patience for my human interference when I was in-form.

“You could be part of the original pack, darling. The only one you’d have to kneel to is me and my mates. After that, everyone kneels toyou. You’re a Silvermane.”

I narrowed my eyes. There was no way in hell Caelum or Ry would go for that deal, and I sure as fuck wasn’t going to kneel in front of anyone unless I was going to get some Grade-A cock from the deal. So that was a no. “I appreciate your offer,” Ireplied, trying to unstick my legs. “But I think we’re moving in another direction from subservience.”

She rolled her eyes. “Darling, I know you’ve only been a wolf for a little bit. You don’t know them. Theyaresubservient. They’re animals. Look at them.” She waved her hand at what could only be described as animalistic carnage.

“Aren’t we all?” I replied, a little taken aback by how bold she was about this. Wasn’t she mated, too? So, didn’t she also have a wolf on the inside?

Then again, I guess it didn’t mean much. Still, despite the fact that I had to really come to grips with the current reality being actual reality and not some sort of bad trip, I had never thought anything Caelum or Ry did was beneath me in some way. Despite how much they wanted to be alpha, and how much they liked spanking my ass, they were far from troglodytes.

My feet were becoming a little loose now. I have no idea why this was; if it was because her spells couldn’t last too long or if it was because I wasn’t the ordinary Lycan—I was a ‘Proto-Lycan’ and I guess that made me oh-so-special. Either way, she was way too close to me to not realize I could move.

Maybe if I could keep her monologuing, then I could really get going. “Why would you do something like this?” I struggled to get myself to ask. My human side was trying its best, trying to get her talking despite the surrounding chaos. People had a natural inclination to answer ‘why’ questions.

“Because I will reclaim my kingdom. This is not my life.”

I didn’t know exactly what that meant, but it sounded bitter. I bet she had an interesting story to that. I wondered how she had lost her original kingdom—was she incompetent? Greedy? Evil? Was she turned on by her subjects or just stabbed in the back by a lover? I bet it was a story that Ridley Scott would masturbate over.

Unfortunately, my wolf wasn’t inclined to hear a story. As soon as my legs were free, it was far more inclined to tear a throat out.

I lunged suddenly, chomping my jaw down on her neck.

She seemed surprised.

Honestly, I was surprised, too. I was leaning towards finding a common ground, maybe getting her to stop her violent actions and coming together, probably discussing some peace terms, maybe talking her into going to some therapy sessions. I don’t know, I had been in the middle of a lot of conflict resolution seminars, and they were all bubbling to the surface like I wasn’t standing in the middle of a fucking hellscape of Juana’s own creation, with my two boyfriend’s lives on the line, not to mention their entire pack.

Didn’t matter. My human hopes seemed to be off the table now.

My wolf was thinking, ‘Mmhmm! Witch tastes just like Ombre’s spicy gumbo!’ while the other part of me was pretty grossed out, I’m not gonna lie. I was not looking forward to craving her later.

But I digress. I didn’t even get to eat her because she turned into a wolf.

What a bitch, right?

Here’s the good news: she couldn’t cast spells as a wolf. This much was obvious, because the second she turned into a wolf, besides me getting a sudden unpleasant mouthful of fur, the earthquake stopped.
