On the drive back to my apartment, I call my senior partner and tell him that since I found stolen property, I had to bail on the case. He’s not happy to lose several hundred thousand dollars in fees but doesn’t want that kind of blithe on our record.
Ash and Emery each text me that they’re on their way to my place, dressed to take our girl out. Show her off.
The next hot, fashion designer is all ours.
I get home to find Ash and Emery standing around my kitchen island looking stressed.
“What’s the matter?” I throw my briefcase down.
“Here.” Ash shoves an envelope at me, his eyes red and glassy.
“What the fuck is this?” I glance at it and recognize Bernadette’s handwriting.
My Loves
With my heart pounding, I crumble it in my hand as I stomp up my stairs to Bernie’s bedroom.
Opening the door, I catch her smell and am relieved.
“Bernadette?” But when I step inside and feel how cold it is, shivers crawl up my spine.
All the warmth she brought into this room, my life, is gone. I look in her bathroom and choke. Her counter is empty.
Oh, shit.No, no, no.Her closet is empty, too.
“What the fuck?” I spin around to find Ash and Emery standing in her bedroom. “Youlet her leave?”
Ash, who looks destroyed, shows me his phone.
“She sent me a text.”
“Me, too.” Emery waves his phone.
“She left this with Nell, who took off when we got here.” Ash tries to console me, but I back away.
Nell let her leave. I feel so betrayed. I tear into the letter. A check flies out first.
Three Hundred and Fifty Thousand Dollars.
Her cut of the highest bid, minus my retainer.
The letter reads:
Ford, Ashton, and Emery,
I’m sorry to do this in writing. I couldn’t face one of you, let alone three of you. One month ago, I planned to move back to California with my designs to start a new life. Then I lost everything. But I met you. All of you. None of us planned to fall in love. And I do love all of you. Each of you for very different reasons. I’m not saying this is the end.
You all rescued me in your own way. When we find each other again, I want to be on top of my game. I want to be worthy of each of you.
Ford, thank you so much for risking your law career for me and saving mine.
Ash, thank you for introducing me to Victoria, who is interested in the new designs.
Emery, thank you for opening your heart to me and taking a chance on love.
