“Hmmm.” With me in the heels, she begins to pin the dress’s hem. “And when you get those designsback, where will you have them made?”

“Stella Raven is buying them. I’ll be working for her in L.A.”

“I might have ignored the writing on the wall too long. You’re a breath of fresh air and a wake-up call that I should expand into the plus-size market. I’m more excited to see you in this dress than the last ten red-carpet dresses I designed. Please, when you get your portfolio back, send it to me.” She leans in. “I trust Ash’s judgment.”

My heart pounds, appreciative of her interest in my work. But I want to go home.

“That’s very sweet of you. I’ll definitely let you see it.” There’s no harm in that.

Victoria steps back. “I’m gonna drop the waist a bit, too.”

“That will look great.” I can see her vision.

“Let me finish pinning, and I’ll have it ready for you by the end of the day. Where can I send it?”

“Um...” I rub my head. “I’m staying with Ash’s friend Ford.”

Victoria drops her measuring tape. “What?”

“Ford...Montgomery.”

“I know who you meant.” She shakes her head. “Ford and Ash are talking?”

My heart seizes. “Yeah, why?”

If they’d had some kind of public falling out, the tension now makes sense.

Victoria’s eyes flutter, assessing me. “They were lovers.”

“Who?” I’m convinced she’s going to say Ash and Charmaine.

“Ford and Ashton.”

I take the news with a tight throat. “Ford and Ashare gay?”

I got my signals mixed, big-time! And did I imagine Ford wanting to fuck me?

“Oh no. They’re bisexual. But never lacking for women.” She takes a breath. “I might have said too much. You should talk to Ash about it.”

“Ford made Ash promise not to touch me.” I don’t tell her about Emery.

Victoria laughs.

“The way I caught Ash looking at you, I think he’s going to break that promise.” She finishes pinning the dress and steps back. “Wow, what a difference. I want that app.”

“It’s on your iPad.”

I step out onto the sales floor, and Ash blushes.

“Oh my God, you look beautiful.”

“Don’t sound so surprised,” I say with a laugh.

“Exactly. It’s an insult to both of us.” Victoria lands in my corner.

“Two women who know their way around scissors and pins? Never.”

I catch what Victoria meant about how Ash looks at me.
