"Shoulda known," I grumbled.

He just lifted his hands. "I just made sure these two made it here in one piece," he assured me. "But your timing is perfect, because I was about to order an Uber."

All I could do was sigh. "Yeah. I'll give you a ride back." Then I looked over at Cody. "Gonna guess you need some clean clothes?" Then over to the man beside her. "You too, Tanner?"

"Clean sounds good," Tanner admitted. "Might want to grab something for J.D. too, if you're up to it."

I looked at the man sleeping on the bed. "How bad is it?"

"Ribs," Jake answered. "Right side's fucked. If it's not broken or torn, it's bruised. He managed to keep from breaking anything else, though."

"But he had internal bleeding," Cody said. "They said his spleen had ruptured."

"Is he going to be ok?" I asked, honestly meaning it.

She jiggled her head quickly. "Looks like. Ty, he's out for the rest of the event."

"Oh, I guessed that," I assured her. "Although he's far enough ahead of us, this might give me a chance." I offered a weak smile, hoping she knew that was a joke.

Well, mostly a joke. It was meant as a joke, at any rate. It was also true. J.D. had enough points that he could miss a few weeks and still be sitting in first place. His ranking wasn't something to worry about. His recovery, however, was.

"Can you bring my fuzzy pants?" she asked.

"Yep." Then I moved around to her side of the room. "I'm going to need your room key, though. I'm guessing you'll all want chargers too?"

"My phone's in my bag," Tanner admitted.

"Then I'll grab that as well," I assured him. "Anything else?"

They made me a list. Cody was even nice enough to pull out her phone and text it to me. Was it bad that I liked that? She still had my number. She hadn't blocked me. It felt fucking nice.

Once I had everything, I didn't really have a reason to linger. I wanted to give Cody a kiss, or maybe even a hug, but I was currently on my best behavior. My goal was to remind her why she'd picked me in the first place, so I had to stay hands-off.

Unfortunately, Jake noticed. The bastard didn't say anything until we were headed down the elevator, but then he reminded me exactly why I'd groaned at the sight of him.

"So, you're still chasing the rookie, hm?"

"Fuck off," I grumbled. "J.D.'s my friend. I'm just helping out."

"Good story," he assured me. "I'm also an extra set of hands, and I have a feeling you're gonna need some."

He was right. I hated to admit it, but getting their stuff, hauling it back, and all of that? Never mind sorting out the crap they'd left back at the arena. If I wanted to get back to the hospital before Cody fell asleep in her boots, I was going to need to hurry a bit.

"Ok," I relented.

Then Jake held up something that clanked. I turned to look just as the elevator reached the ground floor. It was a pair of spurs. Cute ones. That meant little ones.

"Don't want to lose these," he taunted.

I snatched them out of his hands. "Why the fuck do you have her spurs?"

"Because she looked like her boyfriend had just been killed. Because Tanner looked like he was about to hurl. They were a fucking mess, man. I'm not talking nervous or the normal kind of worried. I'm talking freaking the fuck out."

"You saw that wreck."

He grunted. "Tanner's not exactly new to wrecks."

Yep, I was leaving that alone. Thankfully, Jake didn't push. He did fill me in on all the bullshit during the trip back to the Marriott. Every last detail from how Cody had run into the ER with Tanner on her heels, to how she'd called J.D.'s mom, was his emergency contact, and more.
