A soft rap at the door interrupted my thoughts. Climbing to my feet, I made it around the corner to answer that. I was starting to like this setup. It gave us just a little more room and a whole lot more normalcy. The king-size bed was nice too. Getting to sleep next to her?

Yeah, I wasn't gonna think about that. Instead, I focused on getting the crap from the guy delivering it all. Even better, he had one of those trays for breakfast in bed. While he offered to bring it all in, I was too aware of the way Cody looked. One glimpse of her, and someone would call the damned cops thinking I'd been whacking on her.

So I passed a few extra bucks to the guy. Like fifty or so, just so he knew it was all appreciated. Then I set up Cody's meal on the bed. Mine went right beside it. I'd just gotten that ready when she came back out wearing a pair of towels. One was around her body. The other was wrapped up on her head.

"Feel better?" I asked.

"Much," she agreed, moving towards the food like a starving woman. "Oh, that smells so good."

"Then get back under the covers and enjoy it," I told her. "Got berries and shit. Figured you'd be into that healthy crap."

She jerked her chin at me. "You staying in here too?"

"Yep." Fuck. My heart was doing that stupid shit again. "Might even steal a few of your healthy berries."

"But only the healthy ones?" she teased.

Like they had a mind of their own, my eyes jumped over to run down her body. Damn it, she noticed. Worse, she was now grinning at me like I'd just performed some trick.

"The ones on your plate," I said.

Cody pulled the tray over her lap, but she was laughing just a little too hard. "I thought berries were for boys, J.D. You know, to go with the twig."

"Shit," I drawled. "I'm not real sure how they'd end up dirty, but my mind is damned ready to make them something naked."

"Then pass me some syrup." She made her last word into one syllable, proving she was a country girl. "So, what are the plans for today?"

"Rest and recover," I told her. "We just gotta figure out what counts as resting so the rest can be recovering. Oh, and there's a fucking shit-ton of Mike's in there."

That made her giggle. "I like Troy. He's the least professional sponsor I can imagine."

"And Grace?" I asked, wondering about the woman who represented Under Armour. "She cool to you?"

Cody shrugged. "I think so? She's more professional, but she was out at that signing..." Her words trailed off and her fork started moving.

Yeah, her smile had just slipped. That signing event had been when she'd dumped Ty. I was pretty sure she hated that, but she'd been trying to act like it was no big deal. It had taken me and Tanner a whole bottle of whiskey to get her to rant about him, and I was pretty sure she didn't remember most of it.

"You ok?" I asked.

She quickly shoved a bite of pancakes into her face. "Yep."

"Cody..." I warned.

Which got me a heavy sigh. "What do you want me to say, J.D.? That I'm pissed? I'm not. I'm disappointed, ok? I'm sad. I dunno. I just want to rewind all of last weekend and have a do-over, but it doesn't work like that."

"Naw, it doesn't," I agreed. "So how do I help? Want me to talk to him?"

"Yes!" she huffed. And right after, "No."

"I can't do both."

"No," she decided. Then looked over at me. "Maybe?"

"Ok, what do you want, Cody?"

She paused for another bite, proving she had to be starving. "I dunno. I kinda want to know what he was thinking, you know? Like, was he trying to chase me off? Did he care about me at all? Was I just something more interesting to fuck?"

"Or maybe you're impressive enough that none of us know what to do with you?" I offered.
