“Let me check my schedule,” I said before putting myself on mute so that I could check my calendar.

I let out a deep sigh.

If that was her only request, I suppose I could meet it. So far, she was still my only option, and she sounded completely polite, too.

I took my phone off mute and put it to my ear again.

“I can make Wednesday work,” I replied. “What time do you think you’ll get to the house on Wednesday?”

“Well… let’s see here…”

I could hear her thinking out loud.

“The GPS says that it’s going to be at least a three-hour drive from where I currently live,” her voice got louder again as she turned her attention back to me, “So say noon? I figure I’ll have at least an extra hour of traffic, stops, etc. in there somewhere,”Miss Santana said. “Probably three in the afternoon at the absolute latest. Oh wait!”

I waited for her to continue. An awkward silence fell on the line.

“Oh my gosh, I just realized we’re in different time zones. Which means, I’ll be there at two your time. And I also just realized I also messed up when you said to call. I’m so sorry about that. Is now an okay time?”

I tried to contain a sigh. She was polite, but I didn’t like her scatterbrained way of doing business. I scowled but chose to return to her previous question.

“Wednesday at two works for me. I look forward to meeting you, Miss Santana.”

“Jade, please,” she said. “After all, we’ll be living in the same house – even if the ad says that you’re not going to be home all that often.”

I could almost hear the smile in her voice. Something about how cheery she was caught me off-guard. Most people, me included, hated moving. The last time I moved, it had purely been so that I could pursue my passion for fighting fires and saving people. Most of the fires I fought had been set on purpose in a fireplace or a firepit and got out of hand or were accidental. I didn’t see many arson fires, and I was perfectly all right with that.

I’d been fighting long enough to know how awful arson fires were compared to anything else.

“All right… Jade,” I said. “I’ll see you on Wednesday, then. Will you need any help unloading your moving truck or will you be able to handle it all?”

“I should be able to handle it. I’m going to be packing it up on my own,” she revealed. “If I can’t pack it on my own, then I’ll be sure to take you up on that offer. Sound good?”

“Sounds like a plan to me. I’ll text you if I have any more questions about the lease agreement before emailing it to you.”

I kept my voice as even and neutral as possible.

We ended the conversation a few minutes later, thankfully. As I put my phone back in my pocket, I sighed deeply.

I supposed the only thing left to do was to make sure the house was ready for her to move in. I pulled my phone back out of my pocket.

“Quick Maid’s Clean Up. Lucy speaking,” the voice on the other end of the call answered when the call went through. “How can I help you today?”

“My name is Jesse Delaney. I’m calling to see if I scheduled any cleaning for my house in Lantana this week,” I said.

I heard a few clicks on the other end. It sounded like Lucy was looking me up in their system.

“No, there is nothing on the calendar this week for your house, Mr. Delaney,” Lucy replied. “Would you like to change that?”

“Is there any chance you have a cancellation tomorrow?” I didn’t want to take any chances and have the cleaners arrive while we were there, moving Jade in. “I have someone moving in with me later this week, and I would like the place to be clean before she arrives on Wednesday.”

After a few minutes, I was on their schedule for tomorrow. I hung up the call and took a deep breath. With that, there was nothing more I could do until it was time for my tenant to move in I looked around the station. It was a slow day and there were plenty of us here. I could call my Dad and share the good news.

I’d also have to get another key cut for Jade. That could be taken care of on the way home since there was a home improvement store just a few minutes away from the main exit I’d be taking to get home.
