Shit, he was right under the tree. Even closer than I’d feared.

“I know you’re up there. Spying on me?” he growled. “You know what Moon-Ghost does to spies?”

There was a thud. The tree shook.

He’d just punched a freaking tree.

He might not be bright, but he wasstrong.

“If you’re too scared to come down and fight me like a man, I’ll drag you down myself,” he yelled.

And then he began to climb.

Crap.

I stood up and looked around. Unfortunately, the other trees were too far to jump to with any accuracy. The scratch of hands came faster and faster as he climbed. My heart pounded at a dangerous pace. I was a decent bit up, but trees weren’t exactly impossible to scale when you could dig your claws in.

I was out of time. I could move to the edge of the branch, but I doubted it would hold me. I’d need to jump and run.

Could I do it without being seen, though? My cursed red hair would make me a target. No one would want the Alpha Heir’s fated mate to be back from the dead.

His scent permeated the top layer of the tree, wet and angry. I pressed myself close to the trunk as he climbed.

His head reached the level of my branch. Caught.

His nostrils flared as he saw me, bushy brows coming together in an expression that forgot to be angry for the sake of confusion. “You!”

I did the only thing I could.

I kicked him square in the face.

It was a good kick too. Over a decade of aggression behind it.

Richard lost his grip and fell back. I also fell backward, dropping to swing on the branch with my hands and jump down from the tree.Which way to go?Running into Wind-Blood would get me back where I started, and Richard would be able to go back and warn the others. Into Moon-Ghost was risky, but if he and Sabine came out, the area was probably deserted. I didn’t have time to weigh my options.

I bolted for the river.

I didn’t make it.

Richard recovered quickly from the kick to the head and was on my tail. He tackled me. The two of us grappled on the ground. He was naked, which would’ve grossed me out if I wasn’t fighting for my life.

“How are you alive?” he snarled.

I didn’t waste my breath answering. I clawed at his eyes.

“Omega bitch!” he howled.

I used the moment his grip loosened to kick away. He had a hundred pounds of muscle on me in human form. I didn’t stand a chance.

Unless I shifted.

All the times they tormented me because I was weak, scrawny, pathetic.

Now I was a predator.

By the time he stood, I was on four legs, baring my fangs at him.

“Oh, the Omega puppy thinks she can fight.” He belly laughed.
