The words didn’t come from me.

No.

They came from my fated mate, my bully, my tormentor of more than a decade.

Jett King stood at the base of the stairs, murder in his eyes. “In the end, you weren’t entirely useless as a moon-matched mate.” He was immaculate, a younger version of his father, lean muscle, chiseled jaw, a sardonic twist of his lips as he took in the scene. “As thanks, I think I’ll kill you both.”

I tried to summon the green light again, but whatever power I’d had, I was tapped out. My vision was still half gone from Maddox’s choke hold. Daphne tried to stand in front of me, but she was only marginally better off than I was.

Jett looked to be in perfect condition.

There was no way I was going to survive him.

“Avery!”

Cole.

It was impossible, but there, behind me, was a portal of swirling light, Cole in the center.

Jett spotted him too. “What that fuck is that?”

Cole’s attention shifted from me to the Alpha Heir.

“So he’s the one.” Cole didn’t wear his anger as easily as Maddox or Jett. Instead, it was the subtle twitch of his jaw that told me Jett was marked for death.

Jett was too brave or too stupid to note the threat. He started towards us to make good on his promises.

“Step through the portal, now!” Cole snapped.

Jett charged at us, but desperation made me faster, even through the pain.

I didn’t hesitate.

In one leap, I grabbed Daphne and jumped through.

Chapter X

Fallingthroughtheportalback to the land of the living was one of the most absolutely unpleasant sensations I’d ever experienced—and I say this as someone who was literally killed.

The second time through returning to the land of the dead was only a mild improvement.

Pure momentum pushed us through. My head felt like it was tossed in a blender, my brain spinning round and round and round. I twisted onto my side in time to watch the portal flicker shut with a furious Jett still running towards it.

I knew on instinct we hadn’t returned to the castle I’d spent the past few months living in. A glance around confirmed it. That castle had been black, barren rock that glistened in dim torchlight and was borderline freezing.

This castle felt more like a palace. Better lit, taller ceilings, and a plush red carpet that had eased the landing.

Daphne twitched, her body over mine. I’d broken our fall after dragging us through.

My dazed examination fell aside as I checked on my best friend. My hands pressed all over her body, checking to make sure she was in one piece.

“I should be doing that to you,” she said with a whimper. “I think I’m gonna hurl.”

I opened my mouth to reassure her when she just disappeared.

One second, there, on top of me. The next, she was gone. I flicked my gaze up and there was Cole, staring down with an expression I couldn’t decipher. It didn’t feel overly welcoming.

“What did you just do with my friend?” I demanded.
