“Your friend is being taken care of. She’s doing better than you, I’d say.” He sounded almost accusatory, like it was her fault I’d come back all beat up.

“They kept her in a cage of silver,” I hissed in her defense.

He was at once soothing, fingers trailing through my hair, petting me in slow, rhythmic motions that eased my fury. “You rescued her. She’ll be fine, little wolf. She’s under my protection. No one will touch her. Just sleep for now.”

In this, again, I trusted him.

“You didn’t show up in my dreams this time,” I said as my eyes shut. That, maybe more than anything, I needed answers on. I was too tired to pry them from him now, a task that was borderline impossible under the best of circumstances.

He snorted softly. “If you’d actually been sleeping, perhaps. It’s not so easy when you’re completely passed out.”

“Excuses.” The word came out as a huff and turned into a yawn.

“Then find me in your dreams if you wish to see me.”

Chapter XII

Wewereinthesame castle I currently rested in. Of that, I was strangely certain. It made the dream an abnormality.

“My dreams don’t normally have man-made objects in them,” I mused aloud.

“The bed was just an exception then?” Cole asked, startling me.

I don’t know why I was surprised he was there. He’d starred in every dream I had, even though he’d just been a disembodied voice.

I chose to ignore his reference to the one dream I’d had of him, where he’d been very corporeal. I hadn’t known it wasactuallyCole. Which meant I’d given into my every desire and enjoyed the dream thoroughly.

It’d be a happy memory if not for the mortification that Cole had actually seen me begging to come under his tongue.

“Are you going to finally explain why you’re in my dreams?” I demanded, changing the subject. “Or are you going to keep more secrets?”

Cole’s lip quirked up. “You were more fun when you didn’t realize it was actually me.”

I growled. “Wonder why that is.”

“Because you didn’t feel the need to pretend to hold back every lustful thought that crossed your mind?” the male guessed, as if it had been a real question.

My cheeks turned the same red as my hair, even my dream self was unsafe from my blushes. I turned away from Cole and explored the surroundings. Normally, we were in some outdoor setting. Now, we were atop the castle. On top of a tower, it seemed, by the small space. I wedged myself in one of the embrasures and sat, looking out. I could see the entire capital city from here, solidifying where I was. But unlike when I’d found the place earlier, it was utterly deserted.

“Can you just give me answers?” I pleaded. “I can’t take much more of this, Cole. I’m sick of not knowing.”

Cole moved to the merlon, leaning over with his arms folded. I glanced up at him. His expression turned contemplative.

“The first time I found you in your dreams, you caught me off guard.”

“You were there—physically, I mean.” It had been when I was just a kid, stuffed in a locker and passed out.

He nodded. “I hid after that. I didn’t want to interact with you.”

I winced, the words an unexpected blow. For ages, the voice I’d thought had been my subconscious had been my one true confidant, where I’d let myself feel the worst of the rejection of my pack that I hid from even Daphne. And I’d just been a burden to Cole?

“But I couldn’t stay away,” Cole continued. “I told myself I’d hide in your dreams, just check up on you.”

“But you spoke to me.”

“It was impossible to resist,” he said with a shake of his head.

“But how?” I asked. “How was any of this possible? You said… you said I was your queen. Did we know each other? How was that possible?”
