Words I had longed for my entire life, but if I’d learned anything, it was that there was no guarantee anyone could protect you. “I can take care of myself.”

Cole obviously didn’t like that answer, but I didn’t have the energy to argue.

“Look. All I want to do is take a shower and pass out.”

Cole was silent for a moment. Then, in an elegant move, he stepped back and gestured to the door of our room a dozen paces away. “As you wish.”

My eyes widened in surprise that Cole would drop the issue and let me have the last word on it.

I should have known better.

No sooner did I close my eyes to sleep than I found myself in another shared dream.

I’d woken by lakes of lava, unending fields, mountains, even the castle. This time, our setting was a simple field.

And Cole was directly in front of me. Shirtless.

I stumbled back, and he caught me with ease, even though it wasn’t possible to actually hurt myself in a dream.

“Careful, little wolf.”

“Why aren’t you wearing a shirt?” I tilted my head up to force my attention to stay on his face rather than the expanse of muscles that was in front of me.

“I could ask you the same question, but I’m not complaining.”

I jerked my head down.

“Perv!” I snapped. I was in nothing more than a bra and panties, both made of lace that left little to the imagination.

Had Cole seen me naked? Yes. But somehow, the lingerie left me feeling even more exposed.

“All the better for me to inspect you for injuries. After your excursion today.” His eyes flashed.

“That doesn’t even make sense,” I hissed. I crossed my arms over my chest, fighting the flush that was quickly rising on my cheeks.

He cocked a brow in challenge. “It’s your dream, little wolf. If you don’t like how you’re dressed, change it.”

“This”— I dropped one arm to gesture down—“was not my idea.”

“Maybe not consciously.”

“You’re infuriating.”

“If you mind so much, change it. It’s your dream, after all.” He smirked. “Or if you just want to even things out, I can take these off.” He gestured to his trousers.

“That. Will not. Be necessary.” If I really was in control of this dream… I imagined myself in normal clothes. Nothing. I tried reaching with my magic, though…

For a moment, nothing happened. Then, a moment later, I had my workout gear on.

Much better.

He shrugged like it was nothing to him, and glanced around the field. “No bed this time?”

“The bed wasn’t my doing either! And I didn’t know these dreams were real. And you didn’t tell me.” It wasn’t just the humiliation that angered me, it was the fact that Cole always knew so much more than I did and refused to share that knowledge. “You don’t tell me anything. You didn’t tell me I’m supposedly a reincarnation of the old queen of Hell that everyone hates!”

Cole stiffened. “Who told you that?”

I growled. “So it’s true? The question isn’t who told me, it’s why didn’t you tell me? You said I was once your queen, but at every chance since, you’ve refused to give me any more answers!”
