It was instinct that made me extend a hand to the creature that nearly killed the male I loved.

Live.

I unraveled my arm and lifted an open palm.

The dragon pressed its rotted-flesh muzzle into my hand, the nostrils flaring at the touch.

Live.

The green net of magic extended past my skin. It sparked across the undead dragon, covering it in a matter of seconds, from the tips of its horn to the edges of its wings, the broken limbs flaring out.

Live.

Flesh grew on the dragon, first filling in exposed gaps that were slowly closing with growing scales as the newly knitted tendons were hidden under the impenetrable armor. The rotted flesh mended into deep crimson scales.

A wave of exhaustion hit me, but I pushed at the thought again.

Live.

And it did. The final piece slid into place as the empty socket filled with another vertical, slitted eye that seemed to appraise me.

It was possible I had just done something very stupid. Healed the creature we’d barely managed to maim and guaranteed the deaths of everyone I cared about.

But then the dragon knelt before me. Shut its eyes and dipped its head to the ground.

Cole let out a groan under me. Frantically, I shoved off of him and checked his wound.

It was deep. So, so deep.

I had to get him back to the castle so Hecate could heal him. There was no way I could carry him.

I looked back at the fifty-foot-long dragon that had settled next to me. Its eyes snapped open.

This had better work.

Chapter XXXII

Flyingadragonwould’vebeen the coolest thing I’d ever done if not for the fact that the male I loved was bleeding out over its glistening, newly grown scales.

“I need to go to the castle,” I’d told it, hauling Cole’s broken body up onto its back. I settled us between ridges and tried to hold him steady while praying the dragon understood me. The dragon launched up with a flap of its powerful wings and steadily gained height until I could see around for miles and miles. From this angle, the realm seemed endless, its citizens nothing more than small specks in the fading light.

It drew closer and closer to the castle. Please, let me make it in time. I refused to consider the alternative.

The issue with approaching on a dragon that had threatened to destroy the city not half an hour ago?

Hecate had had time to rally the troops, including archers on the roof of the castle.

A hundred bows drew back, aimed at the dragon.

“Don’t shoot!” I yelled over the roar of the dragon’s wings. “Don’t shoot!”

“Stand down!” Hecate ordered, appearing from the crowd in the same blue dress I’d seen her in before. “Clear a space for the dragon to land!”

The soldiers obeyed, and the dragon landed on the massive castle roof. I threw myself down, taking Cole with me as I rushed over to Hecate.

“You brought it back to life.” The awe in Hecate’s voice would’ve taken me aback if I wasn’t so focused on Cole.

“Heal him,” I begged. “He got hurt in the battle.”
