I nearly stumbled.No.

“Even you can’t control fated mates,” I hissed. Even if she had taken control of the wolves for centuries...

Warden of all shifter souls and fates. One of the many titles she’d touted. I wanted to believe it was just ego, but the pit that had formed in my stomach cautioned otherwise.

“Of course, I can control yourmoon-matchedmate. I didn’t expect him to reject you, I’ll confess, though having seen your pathetic form, I hardly blame him.”

I flexed my fingers, feeling my claws dig into my skin. My wolf wanted to burst from my skin, to rip out her throat before she could make another sound.

But as dainty as the woman before me looked, she emanated power. It echoed off every moon-white column, beamed back from every star in the sky.

Her expression was one of triumph.

“Never let it be said I’m not charitable,Avery. That’s why I decidedto reunite you two.”

A jerk of her wrist and there stood my moon-matched mate, his hateful eyes promising every cruel act I’d ever imagined him capable of.

Chapter XIX

Jett stood just fivefeet away. His eyes glowed with hatred. He’d gotten bigger since I’d last seen him. His body was one built for violence and honed by cruelty. He wore simple pants and a shirt that seemed more like something Phaidros would wear rather than the Moon-Ghost Alpha. His right hand, covered in blisters, flexed around a brilliantly shining blade.

He was wielding silver.

I wanted to take a step back. I wanted to put as much distance between myself and the creator of my living nightmare as possible.

I’m the Queen of Hell. I will not back down from this male.

“You’re no match for me, Jett. Not anymore,” I said, staring down at him the way he had stared at me. More than a few fights were won on bravado.

But Jett had been too comfortable seeing me as weak to consider that. “Oh, you don’t make the rules here, mate.”

He charged at me, his silver blade waving. I was probably better with a sword than him, but I was barehanded and, oh right, still in my wedding dress. I barely dodged in time, bending backward to avoid getting slashed across the face.

“What are you even doing here?” I snapped. “Don’t you have a pack to order around?”

Jett’s eyes flashed the same moonstone white as the Moon Goddess’s. “They’ll be fine. When the goddess calls you to her holy war, you answer.” He lunged again. I danced away, the blade slicing the fabric of my dress.

“I’m not going down that easily.” I ripped off the bottom of the dress to free up my legs.

His face contorted into a sardonic grin. “I’m going to enjoy this. Just think, with this I can send you back to those pits you so enjoyed.” At my shock, his smile grew wider. “Oh yes, I know all about what happens to you after I kill you. And where you get sent back if you lay a hand on me.”

“This isn’t your fight,” I snarled. “Walk away and deal with your little pack, Jett. You don’t know what you’re messing with.”

“Oh, but I do.” Jett’s growl was guttural. “I’m dealing with my slut of a mate who let someone else mark her.”

Cole’s mark. I locked down the wave of want that went through me. Hours ago, I’d been happier than ever before. Now I was fighting for my life—again. “He’s ten times the male you are. I willneveraccept you as my mate. You’re a bully and an asshole.”

He swung his blade again, careless in his fury. This one was easy to dodge. “You belong to me. You were given to me by the goddess herself. Don’t think this betrayal will go unpunished.”

I wanted to laugh. “Betrayal? I don’t owe you a shred of loyalty.”

Jett was ready to volley back another insult, but the Moon Goddess’s voice cut through the air.

“Get her out of my sight, Alpha.” She had returned to her throne and watched us with casual detachment. “Resist the urge to kill her a second time. I would find it inconvenient.”

Stars forbid the bitch who had manipulated my fate to be inconvenienced.

A silver sheen washed over his eyes again. Jett attacked me with renewed vigor, his swipes coming impossibly fast. My magic was still good. My wolf wanted to burst forward, but I didn’t dare risk the half-second it took to change. Not when he had that blade. My wolf was an even bigger target.
