"Who the fuck asked you to do that?" Last thing I need is my goddamn boy spouting off around town what we're up to.

Kane jerks free of my hold, stalling while I continue to walk toward the yard. "Fuck you." Sure enough, before long, he follows me outside. "I do somethin’ helpful, and the first thing you do is rip my goddamn head off."

"You did something you weren't asked to. And there was a reason I hadn't asked you to yet."

"What does it matter?" He throws his arms out as we walk. "People know she's here."

"Yeah, they do, but if they hear we're askin' questions about her, what happens then?" I pause and face him.

He chews his bottom lip and shrugs.

"Then people get the idea we don't know fuck all about her, don't they?"

"Wedon'tknow fuck all about her." He stamps his arms over his chest, shoulders as firm as his petulant jaw.

The little fuck is the spitting image of me at that age: more muscles and brawn than he knows what to do with, and agoddamn jawline and dark mess of hair that drives the bitches crazy.

And he fucking makes the most of it.

"No. We don't know much. Buttheydon’t know that.” I resume my march toward my bike and a fucking chance to blow off some steam. “If others get wind of the truth, then they see an opportunity. Tell us what theywantus to believe about her, who she knows, why she moved here. Twist the narrative to suit themselves and their agenda."

"You really think she's that important?" Kane leans a shoulder against the frame of the garage door, watching me as I get set to head out. “So important people would set her up as some fuckin’ pawn in their game? She's a drinkin’ buddy of Maddie's who dated a douche and dug a deeper hole than she could get out of."

"She witnessed the governor's brother be murdered. By Terry."

He sucks a breath between tight lips. "Shit."

"Yeah. Shit." I tug my gaiter over my neck and retrieve my helmet. "What did you hear, then?"

A smug smirk graces my son’s face. Goddamn asshole got that look from his momma. "Oh, sonowyou want to know."

"Just tell me before I get tired of your shit and run your foot over." With a twist of the key and a tap of the button, my pride and joy rumbles to life.

Kane takes a step closer to be heard properly. "So, the weird thing is, when she arrived here in town, she didn't immediately find somewhere to live or work. The woman lived in her car for several weeks before she even made a fuckin' inquiry about either. Couple of the boys would see her in the park or the town center, just hanging out, watching everyone."

“Where’s the car now?”

“She sold it.”

I toss a leg over the bike. "What's your gut feelin’?"

"If you relocated somewhere, wouldn't your first order of business be to find a room or employment? Wouldn’t you keep a way to leave if you had to?”

"Maybe she had money already." I tug the black fabric over my mouth, tucking the sides under the edge of my open facer. “So, gettin’ a job wasn’t a big deal.”

“Then why sell her car?”

"Perhaps she was sure this is where she wanted to stop."

"Or perhaps," Kane says as he takes a step back while I kick in the stand. "Perhaps she was lookin' for somethin’. Sounds to me like the girl scoped the place out before she made her move."

"You think she's dirty?"

"Got to ask yourself the question, don't you?"

He's fucking right I do, which is why I nudge the bike into first and ride off without another word. All conversation has brought me today is trouble, so why waste another minute inviting more? A ride better clear my fucking head and bring me clarity around this girl or so help me, there'll be hell when I get back.

Rae sees me like that—some fucker to take advantage of—and she'll be doing more than calling her ex in the middle of the night. She'll be the one opening the damn gate to let him in.
