I knock twice before entering the room.

“I hope I’m not interrupting work too much,” I say timidly.

With Travis, I do not see myself as the boss I need to be because it’s pointless when it comes to things like romance.

He looks up from his computer and smiles at me. “I wouldn’t mind an interruption from you.”

That just causes butterflies to flutter in my abdomen. Romantic interest is something I haven’t bothered myself with since my separation from Thomas because I fear being hurt again.

Once bitten, twice shy. Travis makes that all go away.

“How have you been?” He stands to approach me, and my nervous heart begins to pick up its beating pace.

“Not too shabby, just a little tired from the New Jersey trip.”

Since he is a manager here, he didn’t come along with us for the weekend expedition. He stands a lot closer to me than usual, and it makes me uncomfortable, but not in a bad way.

“Yeah, you were gone for a while, and I missed you.” His soft voice brings with it a soothing feeling.

It’s the voice responsible for all my emotional healing as far as that is concerned, so I welcome it into me.

“I missed you too,” I force myself to say. In actual truth, I probably never even thought about him all through the time I was in the east side of the country.

Travis is just one of those people that makes sense. He’s kind, caring, and handsome. What more could anyone want?

“Let’s go on a date, then, me and you,” he suggests, and I look at him with wary eyes.

“I don’t know, Travis. I think it’s a little too early,” I whine, but of course, in the manner of women, I just want him to convince me even further so that I can be sure he really wants to do this with me.

“There always must be a first time, Rebecca. Alright, I’ll pick you up by seven once I’m done.” He places a light peck on my cheek that leaves me flustered.

Say no more, Travis…say no more.

This would mean that instead of going back home, I have to hang around the office until evening time.

That’s supposed to completely exhaust me, but the promise of spending some time with Travis is enough to strengthen me.

Jordan would resume his shift in the afternoon, and I call him to make sure he doesn’t go to the house and instead comes to the office where Skylar is.

When he arrives,he looks at me longer than he usually does. Normally, I can sense the distaste oozing off him. Jordan and I never got along, and we still don’t. What my encounter with him this morning proved right is that we would have very awkward moments.

I have no idea.

“I might come home late. I’m very sorry.” I feel the need to be more delicate with him now, having seen a vulnerable part of him—his nudity.

He doesn’t speak, just a nod, like I’m used to. I nod back, seeing that he’s trying to revert to the professional air we used to regard ourselves with.

The date with Travis is bliss, and everything seems to go smoothly, with both of us laughing and talking about things completely out of work. I’ve never felt happier in a long time.

Life always has a way of dampening that, though. He’s trying to tell me something when suddenly, he looks ahead of him, and his face turns white.

He’s opposite me, so his head is my behind, and when I turn to see what has gotten him scared, I see a petite brunette woman charging at us.

“Baby, please don’t. This is my boss,” he immediately defends himself. “We’re here on official business.”

My heart drops immediately. I knew Travis doesn’t have a wife, but what I didn’t put into consideration was that he could be seeing someone…And that that person wouldn’t be me…just me.

I look at him in shock, but his face is desperately fixed on the woman who slows down, and her face relaxes from the anger.
