Once she's done with that, I follow her into the house where she goes to meet Marie, who dresses her up. A cute light blue dungaree that matches her eyes is draped over a pink top, making her look every part the cute toddler that she is.

"Hey Skylar, can we…" I tried to suggest a less demanding game because I already know her favorite.

She doesn't listen to me, probably already deciphering what I’m about to say, and she sprints in the opposite direction away from me.

"Count to a hundred!" she yells as she moves as fast as her tiny legs can carry her.

I should chase her, but it's not worth it.

That would probably lead to another one of her favorite games, which is tag. Honestly, I find hide and seek a much less physically demanding game than tag.

I count the first ten out loud just so that she hears me counting, but in that time, I set an alarm for my timer for a hundred seconds. That's one hundred and ten seconds, to be precise, so I gave her some extra time.

“Ready or not, here I come!” I yell and begin combing the house.

There’s a lot of space to be searched and a hundred seconds is ample time for even a toddler to seek proper hiding.

If I was to simply dedicate my time to searching for her completely clueless, it would take me way too long to find her, hence we developed a system for a more adrenaline paced game.

Hide and clap.

“First clap!” I yell and it comes from down the stairs. I take my precious time and descend the stairs. I don’t need to rush myself, at least not yet.

I have three claps in total, meaning I have two left now. One would be used to determine her general location downstairs, while the other would pinpoint her exact location.

Easy peasy.

“Second clap!” I say, with a lower voice this time as I perceive she might be nearby.

It comes and is a lot sharper than her normal clap. I guess she got the perfect dap.

I follow it, and it leads me into through the hallway that connects all utilities, such as the laundry room and the basement.

“Third clap.”

It comes and I trace it to the laundry room.

Poor choice, considering all I must do is look behind the two washing machines and a few other crevasses.

Skylar is usually a better hider, so I’m guessing this is probably a warmup. I whistle as I enter the room just to give a sense of suspense.

The room is dead silent, which isn’t unusual and as I turn corners, even my heart races a little. Suspense is the game of hide and seek.

“Boo!”

“Ahh…fuck!” I roar when a massive form jumps out of the corner I was just about to check.

Rebecca bursts out laughing, having successfully mauled my soul with that jump scare.

“Gotcha!” She holds her stomach and doubles down in hard laughter. I’m still trying to recover from the jump scare.

Well, that’s unexpected.

Having Rebecca not just scare me but participate in our play is the weirdest thing ever and when I’m down from the high, I don’t even know what to say.

“Still about to have a heart attack?” she laughs heartily, and I simply nod.

“Since when did you become a fan of hide and seek?” I pant.
