“Rebecca, are you alright?” His voice portrays concern, but it soothes my body…especially my legs.

It makes it feel safe enough to finally let myself fall…

I don’t realize the action is happening in real time until Jordan’s scent invades my nostrils.

How did he cross that distance so fast?

That isn’t important, though. I feel more at peace now that he’s here with me. Everything that he’s telling me blurs and still offers me the comfort I seek.

My heartbeat gets even louder, until it’s all I can hear. I just want to sleep, and sleep is what I do.

By the timeI wake up, I’m not even home. I know even before opening my eyes, because I can feel the stiffness of the bed I lie on.

When I open my eyes, they feel closed, because Jordan’s eyes stare back at me, trapping me.

I don’t think he realizes he has this effect on me.

“You’re awake, finally,” he breathes.

“You didn’t want me to wake up?” I chuckle weakly. I try to move my hand to stroke his face, but I can’t. I’m just too weak.

“I didn’t want you to collapse,” he retorts, placing a kiss on my forehead.

I don’t know how I’m able to tell, but I’m sure my cheeks bleed red all over right now. The shameless smile on my face is testament to that.

“What really happened?” I ask him. I finally get control of my hands and stroke his face. His beard might need a trim, but it doesn’t make him look or feel less handsome. His rich curly hair.

Omani hair.

I’m in love with an Omani man. I never thought I’d even meet someone from there, let alone intimate myself with a citizen.

Yet, here I am, with the son of the late Sultan?a royal family member.

Why hasn’t he gone back to claim his throne? Does he even know he has a throne to inherit?

There is the possibility that he’s not the only heir to the throne, but even then, I bet he still has such a notable spot that he might be giving up by being here.

By being with me.

I want to tell him everything…I swear to the highest heavens, I do. But how on earth would I phrase it? How on earth would I get home to understand that that plan didn’t include me?

After all, I am a prodigy. It’s more than possible that I knew all this while.

How do I explain that I just found out this treachery?

As Jordan recounts to me the series of events that led to my ending up in a hospital, a doctor comes in to interrupt our conversation.

“I’m glad you’re finally awake, Mrs. Laws…”

“Miss Lawson,” Jordan immediately helps me to correct the doctor. I can’t describe the feeling I feel, but it’s nice.

Having him stand up for me even in times where it seems mundane makes me feel warm on the inside. That’s the only way I can describe it.

“Miss Lawson. I’m sorry. I was saying, I’m glad you’re awake,” the doctor continues, taking the correction with a smile.

“It’d be a little suspicious if you weren’t. What’s wrong with me, Doc?” I huff. I want to get out of this place already. The bed and my back are completely incompatible.

“Well, it’s nothing more than the basic diagnosis,” the doctor tells me. “Fatigue. We’re getting traces of some cardiac issues, but they aren’t a concern yet…or at least, we can’t determine now. Even the healthiest of people would collapse under the strain you put your body through.” He shakes his head.
