“It’s a scan, Jordan…of my womb,” Rebecca says.

“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me,” Thomas scoffs through his own blood.

I exhale hard.

“Is it tr…true…a…are you really…” I stutter. I can’t believe it.

“It’s mostly indecisive as it’s just two weeks in so I haven’t started experiencing symptoms, but the scans confirmed it. I’m pregnant, Jordan.” Tears streak down her face.

I just wish this would be the last. She’s suffered too much.

Thomas groans in the background. “Well, that’s marvelous. Now could you put that bullet in my head already?”

I walk to her and envelope her in a hug. Now, I feel like a terrible person. I was about to leave her with my baby. I was about to fail her the way Thomas failed Skylar.

“I didn’t know…” I croak.

“Now, you do…promise me you won’t leave,” she sobs. “I don’t want to be without you again.”

“You won’t,” I vow.

“Oh, come on! You know if you let me live, I’ll just sue you for assault! There’s no proof I killed Rayan but your eyes…and even then, that’s not enough, so just kill me!” Thomas spits in disgust.

Rebecca smiles…surprisingly and raises her phone to Thomas. “I got that recorded,” she chuckles.

“Well, better call the police now, before I change my mind and shoot him. I’m tired of hearing his voice.” I roll my eyes.

If I can’t kill him, at least let him rot for the rest of his life. It’s fitting after I almost spilt his face open.

“Fuck you, Rebecca. And fuck that stupid parasite inside you,” Thomas groans as she initiates a call to the Coast Guard.

“I love you, Rebecca,” I tell her amidst Thomas’s rants.

“I love you too, Jordan.” She nestles herself in my bloody hands, staining her white shirt, but she doesn’t mind.

I love her to death.

He continues making snide remarks till the police come and scoop him off the rig in a chopper. They offer to take me as well for checkup, but Rebecca doesn’t allow them, paranoid that they might want to arrest me as well.

He lives.

After everything, Thomas Hilbert lives…and I forgive him.

EPILOGUE

REBECCA

“Can the baby hear me now, Mommy?” Skylar asks eagerly for what the thousandth time must be.

“I guess so, baby. She can.” I answer. I previously tried to ingrain it into her that babies in the womb can’t indicate that they hear, even if they do.

Skylar doesn’t seem to mind, though, and would communicate with her baby sister however she can.

They already have a super tight bond, and I haven’t even given birth. As soon as Skylar places her ears to my belly and starts talking, the baby inside starts kicking.

Skylar loves those moments.
