Archer reaches out and tucks a strand of hair behind my ear, sending a shiver down my spine. Then he steps back and grins. “Okay then. What do we need to do around here to finish up so I can take you out?”

Chapter 4

Archer

Livie and I have just spent the last two hours laughing and getting to know each other over dinner at the Saloon, a local bar and restaurant here in Heart River. I knew it was worth taking a chance to stop by and ask her out. I was serious when I said I’ve been cursing my luck. The guys could tell I was into her the moment she left, and they have been teasing me about her relentlessly for weeks.

I’ve been focused on managing Rhett’s ranch for so long that I can’t recall the last time a woman sparked so much of my interest. If ever. Each night as I’m trying to sleep I think about what it would be like to have her in my arms, to have her in my bed. To taste her lips, to hearher moans when I’m between her legs, to watch her face when I make her come.

I couldn’t take it any longer. And then earlier today I think Will’s exact words were, “If you don’t quit acting like a little bitch, I’m gonna go up there and ask her out myself,” Well, that did it.

After work today I showered and left the ranch, determined to put myself out of my misery. But against all reason, this beautiful girl agreed to go out with me, and even seems to be enjoying my company.

I told her about growing up in Montana and how ranching was all I ever wanted to do. She told me about nursing school and what led up to her move to Montana. As glad as I.am that she’s here, it makes my blood boil to think that some asswipe didn’t treat her the way she deserves.

Livie checks her phone and her eyes go wide. “Archer! I’m so sorry, I didn’t realize how late it is. I think I’d better head home and check on my grandmother.”

“Of course,” I nod, signaling to the waitress to bring our check. After paying, we walk out of the restaurant and are greeted with a blast of cold air and the sight of several inches of new snow covering the road.

“Oh shoot! I had no idea it was gonna snow tonight.” Livie bites her lower lip, glancing around.

It’s then that I remember she has that little car. The one without snow tires. “Let me drive you home.”

“I hate to ask you to do that, Archer.” She looks up at me, concern on her beautiful face.

“I insist. Come on, my truck’s right over there in front of the bakery.” I hold my arm out and she wraps hers around it, snuggling against me as we walk across the street. When her soft curves press against me my cock starts to swell. What am I? Some horny teenager?I put her in my truck and can’t help but stare at her perfect ass as she climbs in. That’s it. I am a horny teenager.

We make it to her grandmother’s house in less than ten minutes. I follow Livie to the door, then stop when she turns around, smiling up at me. “I had a great time tonight, Archer.”

“Me too, Livie. I’d like to see you again soon. How about-”

Just then a voice crackles over a speaker. “Olivia Jane Henderson, who’s that with you?”

Livie’s face turns red before she looks at the camera above the front door. “Hi Grandma Anne. This is my friend Archer. And since when did you learn how to work the doorbell camera?”

“Oh, the hot cowboy you can’t stop talking about? Bring him in here so I can get a good look at him!” Then she continues, “Young man, come inside and greet an old lady properly.”

I grin up at the camera. “Yes ma’am. Happy to.”

Grandma Anne’s voice comes over the speaker again. “Ohh, I see what you’ve been talking about Livie!”

Livie shakes her head as she opens the front door, motioning me to follow her inside. “I have to warn you, Grandma Anne keeps the heat on high.”

“No worries, it’s better than freezing, right?” I close the door behind me, and instantly feel the heatwave. “Oh, I see what you mean.”

Taking my coat off and hanging it next to Livie’s, I follow her through the small but tidy house to find her grandmother. She’s sitting on the sofa with a knitted blanket over her legs and smiles up at me warmly.

“Hello there young man. Your name’s Archer, is it? What’s your last name? You know, I knew a family by the name of Archer back in the day. Fine people. James and Margaret. You any kin to them?”

I nod, surprised. “Yes ma’am. Those were my grandparents. My last name’s Burton. My mom is their daughter Maggie. She wanted to keep the Archer name going, so she gave it to me as a first name.”

Her face lights up, then she turns to Livie. “Well well. He’s a fine looking fellow and from good people too, Livie. I approve. Much better than that good-for-nothing doctor douchebag you dated.”

I bark out a laugh as Livie turns red again. “Grandma Anne! I thought we agreed to watch our language when we have company over!”

“Pshaw! This cowboy ain’t bothered my little ole me.” Granda Anne winks at me. I think I’m in love with two women in this family.Whoa, where did that thought come from?

“Livie, would you and Archer excuse me? I think it’s past my bedtime.”
