She nods as she takes a sip of her coffee. "I've never left the state. Born and raised here. But I'd love to visit someday."

Just as I'm about to speak I catch Marissa's subtle eye-roll, I follow her gaze which leads to Greig walking in.

"Morning, Ms. California. You look like you stepped right out of an ad," he says with a smirk.

I bite back a sassy reply, grabbing the two cups of coffee and heading for the door. "Good morning to you too, Greig," I mutter under my breath.

Right as I'm about to step out, he calls after me, "Hey, Cali girl?"

I let out a quiet sigh and turn around.

Greig's expression shifts to something more serious. "I was thinking, maybe you could show me a few things while you're here. I want my job back after you leave."

Marissa, slipping past me with a soft chuckle, throws a "See you later, Quinn" over her shoulder as she exits.

I look at Greig, deciding to give him a chance. "Sure, Greig. But please, call me Quinn, not 'Cali girl' or 'Ms. California' I'm not a walking billboard for the state."

He grins. "Alright, Quinn."

I leave the break room with a deep breath, holding the coffee.

As I head to Weston's office, I think about the schedule. Balancing the assistant manager role with project management tasks might intimidate some, but I thrive on challenges. Plus, the added responsibility comes with a nice raise, making it all worthwhile.

I enter Weston's office, noticing the door is slightly open. His eyes are all over me as if committing every detail to memory.

"Good morning, Weston," I say, around a smile.

As I hand him his coffee, he starts to say something, then stops and clears his throat. "You look... professional. Let's discuss the schedule, shall we?" He's making an effort to keep things strictly business after I drew the line yesterday. Is it terrible that part of me wanted to hear whatever compliment he intended to throw my way?

I set the coffee down on Weston's desk and pull out my digital planner. "First, we have the Nashville charity coordinatorsscheduled this morning. We have about thirty minutes before their arrival."

He takes a sip of his coffee. "Do you have the contribution details ready?"

I nod confidently. "Yes, I've got it all planned out. I'm going to set up in the board room and get the projector ready as soon as we wrap up."

He nods. "Anything this afternoon?"

I scroll down until I get to the next meeting. "Yes, one conference call at two, then just your usual end-of-day check-ins with department heads."

He picks up his pen and redirects his focus to the paperwork in front of him. "Good. You're free to go."

I flash a smile and head toward the door. I almost feel a little let down by our short encounter. Where's the spice from yesterday? Oh yeah, I told him to fuck off in a professional way so I can't be too surprised by his professional demeanor.

Right as I'm about to close the office door, I hear him call out, "Quinn?"

I pause and look back.

"You look perfect," he comments.

A grin spreads across my face involuntarily. "Thanks," I reply and quickly step out pulling the door shut behind me.

Walking down the hallway, I can't shake off his compliment which has me blushing like a schoolgirl. I see Greig walking out of the copy room. He looks puzzled, probably wondering why I seem so giddy.

He starts to say, “You good, Cali—” but stops when I glare at him, my smile quickly fading. Correcting himself, he says, “Quinn. I meant to say, Quinn.”

I just give him a quick nod as I keep walking. "Yeah, I’m good."

I enter the board room and walk over to the projector.
