“Repeat.”
“They’re in a bag we hid in some brush around a cluster of trees behind some houses.”
“??? ????? ?????,” I say to Jax, who’s already looking through a container holding a bunch of cylindrical tubes that are attached to the wall.
That’s convenient.I wonder how many times they had to use those?
Finding the one he wants; he unscrews the lid and pulls out the contents. He brings it over, standing a few feet in front of Nicole, and then he and Sasha unroll it. It’s a laminated overview of the entire compound. Walking around so I can see her face, I watch her as she looks it over. Jax hands me a marker.
“Which house is closest to where the bag is hidden?”
There’re only four houses so far, but she takes a moment to look at the whole map again.
“It’s between the third and fourth house. Then it’s back a bit into the woods.”
I uncap the marker and point to the middle area between our house and Bear’s.
“Around here?”
“Yes.”
I make a small ‘x’ on the map. “Tell me how far back, approximately.” I inch my way further up the map, waiting for her answer. After a couple of seconds, I have my answer.
“Around there, I think.”
Making another ‘x’, I circle it. Jax takes the other side of the map from Sasha and then walks to another table. Patch joins him and plops down tools on the corners so it won’t roll back up.
Focusing back on Nicole, I try hard not to let my emotions take control.
“What’s the bag look like?”
She hesitates, and I draw my ka-bar. Sasha still has her blade under Nicole’s chin, which she lowers until it’s at her throat.
Her gaze bounces between us both. I lightly run it down her face, not enough to draw blood, but enough to up her fear factor. After a couple seconds, I see the moment she caves.
“It’s a small camo backpack. There’s a metal box inside containing ten more cameras.”
“Where were you going to hide the other cameras?” Thor asks.
“I-I was supposed to put them along the edge of the tree line, facing the houses. Two for each house. The other two, I was supposed to put in both guard shacks so they could have a clear line of sight when people leave. As getting the codes to the gate. They know they change daily.”
With a quick glance at Jax, he gives me a chin lift and then his fingers fly across his keyboard. If there is a bag out there, I’m sure we’ll know soon.
I try to stamp down my anger, but it must still show to some degree because Nicole pales even further and tries to lean as far back as she can from me.
“Who are ‘they’ that you talked about?”
Her eyes widen, and even though Sasha’s knife is to her throat, she shakes her head, then winces as the blade digs a little deeper, and more blood trickles down her throat.
Time to up the ante.
