“Doris, you have been reprimanded time and time again about allowing this to happen as the charge nurse as well as Daphne’s mother, since she’s the one that usually starts these messes. This isnotthe first time someone’s been given abortion paperwork when they never requested it. You may be my late mentor’s widow, but I will not allow this discrimination and harassment to continue in this office.”
“You’re punishing us when sluts like her shouldn’t even be allowed to reproduce? She’s obviously pulled one over on these guys to score herself not one, but two of these bikers. She doesn’t even know which one of them is the Father!”
“Daphne,” Doris hisses, but Daphne ignores her.
“No, Mom. Dr. Rowen is ruining Dad’s practice. He’s continuing to let filth like her in here, not caring if the child ever knows the Father, and is just going to be leeching off of us normal people when they go on food stamps! For all we know, she could be screwing all the Steel Archangel bikers!”
My anger’s damn near boiling as Daphne continues to spew her hate. Glancing at Levi, she’s beyond pissed and is clenching her hands repeatedly, something I’ve learned she does when she knows she shouldn’t reach for a blade. Fuck.
“Dr. Rowen, if we could please move this along, I really don’t want my fiancée to continue to listen to this hate. It can’t be good for the baby or for her to get this worked up.”
His gaze cuts to Levi, who must also see her veins about to pop as she resists going after Daphne. He gives me a curt nod.
“Zach, Trent, take them both away.”
“About time,” Zach mutters as he removes Doris’ badge and hands it to Dr. Rowen. Trent does the same with Daphne’s badge, before they escort them both, screaming down the hallway.
Dr. Rowen steps further out into the waiting room.
“I apologize for this outburst. We will be with you all shortly.” He turns back toward us. “Nikki, if you could please take Miss Wallace and her fiancées to their room, I will be in in a moment.”
He steps over to Stephanie to gather the copies and talks with her quietly.
Nikki nods to Smoke before leading us down the hallway. She gets Levi’s weight and height and then brings us into a patient room.
Once we’re in the room with the door shut, Nikki wraps Levi in a hug.
“I’m so sorry that this is how we met in person, but I can’t tell you how happy I am to see those fucking bitches walked out of here!”
Levi laughs along with Nikki.
“Now, let’s get you settled in and fill out a few more questions I have for you. I’ll wait to take your blood pressure and heartbeat until you’re able to calm down a bit more.”
It’s surprising to see how fast she can flip into nurse mode.
“Thank you so much, Nikki. I was secretly hoping you’d be my nurse today. Actually, is there any way I can request you as my nurse going forward? Besides not knowing if there are any more Doris’ or Daphne’s still employed here, I’d love to be able to have you by my side as your niece or nephew grows bigger.”
“I’m sure Dr. Rowen will allow it as long as I’m not already tied up with other patients. Besides, you helped him get rid of two of our major pain in the asses. They seem to think they can play God here just because Doris’ late husband, Dr. Dalton, was the head doctor here for years. He was super religious and would only take clients that he knew were of ‘good standing family values’. If any of the other doctors took patients with ‘suspect origins’, they never heard the end of it. They usually didn’t last longer than a year because of Dr. Dalton.” Nikki rolls her eyes.
“There are many other reasons why women get pregnant, but if they aren’t married to a man first, then he wouldn’t treat them. Until Dr. Rowen started here, most pregnant women I know usually went to nearby towns to see OB-GYN’s there.”
She scoffs, but I can see the anger behind her words. Fuck. Did this Dr. Dalton mess with her when she was pregnant with Sadie? I’m not sure who Sadie’s father is, but I know he isn’t in the picture according to Smoke.
Nikki switches back to nurse mode and takes notes on Levi’s family history. Just as she finishes, there’s a knock at the door, and Dr. Rowen enters.
“Levi, Thor, and Dragon, I sincerely want to apologize for what happened with Doris and Daphne. I hope they haven’t deterred you from using me or the rest of my staff, though if it has, I know quite a few surrounding doctors that are accepting new patients.”
“Thank you. Dr. Rowen. We’d like to stay here if all possible. Though to be honest, if you had kept Doris and Daphne here after that fiasco, I would be going elsewhere,” Levi says, and Dr. Rowen sighs.
“I am extremely sorry that you had to experience that. They’ve been given several notices, but I honestly think they thought they were above the law. They can’t continue to harass patients because of who they’re seeing or how they got pregnant.”
He pauses as he shakes his head, but then seems to snap out of his train of thought.
“So, Nikki tells me that you just recently found out you were pregnant. Is that correct?”
“Yes. My brother, Smoke, as well as our friend Patch, who’s a nurse in the hospital’s ER, suspected I was pregnant. I then took some home tests, and they came back positive.”
Fuck, am I glad she didn’t mention Patch running that test for her. I know he did it under the radar and I don’t want him getting into trouble because of us.
