He needs to back the fuck off. She’s mine. And while I can already tell it’ll take a bit for her to warm up to me, I’ll do what it takes to tie her to me in every way.

Ethan gives me a startled look after a few seconds, but then grins and gives me a chin lift. Thank fuck he’s not going to fight me for her. However, if it came down to it, I would.

When she’s clear of the gate, I restart my bike, once again thankful she’s closer to me so I can get a better look at her. As I drive past, I can’t help but notice the sheen of sweat on her forehead.

Shit.

Did she walk all the way out here? At first when I saw her by the gate, I figured she had an uber drop her off or something. Even though it’s early September, it’s a warm, sunny day.

As soon as I park, I grab a water bottle from my saddlebag and then drop it back inside.

She’ll probably appreciate a colder one more.

Digging out my phone, I text Drae and have him bring me out a cold bottle of water for her. Pocketing my phone, I take quick strides to where Thor’s standing over by the gate.

A few moments later, I hear someone hurry over to me and I’m relieved it’s Drae with not one but two water bottles for which I’m thankful for. Her face is turning a little redder as she eyes us warily and I’m not sure if it’s from fear, the heat, sunburn, or any combination of the three.

Stepping forward, I make sure Thor sees me before I offer her them. Normally, he’d lead the questioning of someone showing up out of the blue like this at our compound. He looks her over quickly and gives me a chin lift. Even if he hadn’t, I still would have offered them to her, but unless they were an enemy, I doubt he’d deny someone a drink of water.

“They’re still sealed, and you look like you could use them. Did you walk here?”

She takes them both and lowers her bags to the ground after stowing one of the water bottles in her duffle bag. Tucking her papers under her arm, she quickly breaks the seal and downs about half the bottle before tucking the bottle into the pouch next to her other one.

Once she turns back to me, she gives me a hesitant smile. “Thank you for the water. I ran out a while ago. To answer your question, yes, I walked here from the bus station in town.”

“Why are you here?” Thor asks again, since the others didn’t hear what she said before. She hesitates as she bites her lip and looks at all of us. She seems startled when Levi steps up next to Thor.

“A-Are you Thor? The President of Forest Creek Steel Archangel’s MC?” she asks nervously, which is odd since I saw her eyeing his patches earlier. The tremor in her voice makes my chest tighten and I hate that she seems nervous or scared of us.

“Yes. Now answer me. Why are you here?”

“I need help and I’m looking for my dad. I have information that says he’s a member here.”

“Why do you need help?”

“I think my stepdad, and maybe my mom, are trying to sell me to someone.”

I curse and hear more curses ring out behind me. Thor looks at Levi hesitantly, a worried look crossing his face.

Fuck. What is it with people and trying to sell those close to them?

He turns back to the woman. “Who’s your dad?”

“Jax. Jaxon Witlock.”

Turning, I look at Smoke and wince at the anger radiating off him.

“I’ve only had one daughter, and she died the day she was born twenty-one years ago to the day. I haven’t touched a woman since that day when I broke up with my girlfriend. There’s no way you’re my daughter,” he says in a hard voice.

Fuck, he went twenty-one years without having sex? That’s some fucking monk-like restraint. And here I was thinking my streak was a long one. While none of us know what happened years ago, some say he was burned pretty badly by his pregnant girlfriend. From what we just heard, it sounds like that’s true.

I turn back to the woman, along with most everyone else, and I’m surprised that she has a sad look on her face and her eyes are misting up as she shakes her head.

Smoke steps up in between me and Thor and she holds out some pictures to him. He takes them, and instead of looking over his shoulder at the pictures, I keep an eye on him to make sure he doesn’t freak out and possibly hurt her. I know he’d never do it intentionally, but the anger rolling off him is making me cautious.

After a few moments, his hands start to shake. He looks back up at her and she hands him some papers and a notebook before pointing to a passage.

“I never died, but they made it look that way. I have more information to show you if you want, but after reading Mom’s journals, I figured this would be the best place to start.”
