“Even better than earlier! Thank you, baby, that was just what I needed.” She wraps her arms around my neck and kisses me.

Fuck, I think I’m addicted to this woman’s kisses. The guys catcall and whistle, causing Sunshine to laugh. Pulling back, she smiles and moves to get her things out of the saddlebag once I get off my bike.

Walking into the clubhouse, Mama Astrid immediately snags Sunshine and the two of them go off into a corner. The grin she gives me over my shoulder twists my insides.

And not for the reasons you might think.

This is how she is when there isn’t a heavy cloud weighing down on her shoulders. A weight put there by Preston, Bruce, that X fucker, and unfortunately, Smoke.

Seeing her this happy and carefree makes me even more determined to catch these fuckers.

It’s nearing suppertime and I’m sitting with Reaper, Doc, Loki, Punisher, Odin, and Python while we enjoy a few beers. Though, Python’s got his nose in his computer looking for shit on Bruce and Preston when my phone vibrates.

Digging it out of my pocket, I bite back a groan.

It’s Smoke.

Taking a deep breath, I answer it.

“You better not be calling me to spew more of that shit.”

He clears his throat.“No, I’m not. I tried calling Mae, but she didn’t answer, so I figured I’d try calling you.”

“Sunshine’s cooking supper right now with Mama Astrid. They have music on, so I bet she didn’t even hear the phone ring.”

He sighs and I can almost see him hanging his head.“Is it... I mean, in the meantime, can we talk? I’d like to apologize.”

Shock fills me, but at the same time, so does relief. “Just a sec. Let me get somewhere more private.”

He grunts and I mute my phone before leaning in closer to Reaper. It’s not that I don’t care if the other guys hear me, but just in case he goes off his rocker, I don’t want Sunshine to hear it. Not after how happy she’s been.

“Hey, Reap. I need to take a phone call but want to stay nearby—can I use your office or Church?”

He looks at me in question and I flip my phone around so he can see that I’m talking to Smoke. He inhales sharply as his features harden.

“Go to Church. That way, you have room to pace if need be. But Timber, try not to put any holes in my walls.” The smirk he gives me has me chuckling.

“Well, if I do, it’s a good thing I’m in construction.”

I slap his shoulder as I get up and make my way into Church, unmuting my phone in the process.

“Okay, shoot.”

Smoke sighs. “I’m sorry. I can’t even begin to express how sorry I am at how I treated Mae and you. Especially Mae. I know I’m going to probably be groveling for the rest of my days, but if it means she’ll let me into her life, I’ll gladly do it.”

Well, fuck. I wasn’t expecting that.

“I take it you rewatched all the footage, read through all of Lillian’s shit, and took a closer look at those photos.”

“Yeah, I did, but that’s not what started it all.”He pauses, and my gut tightens.“Someone slipped a letter under my door during the party the other day. I have no idea who the fucker is. He or she never showed his face to the cameras. I’m pretty sure it’s a guy though from the build.”

“What do you mean there’s another letter? You should have brought this up during Church the other day.” I don’t even try to bite back my growl, my anger rising too much and I’m about to put a hole in the wall. “I can’t protect her if I don’t know what the fuck is going on, Smoke! What the fuck was in that letter?”

“I don’t know why I didn’t bring it up,”he growls right back, and I scoff.

I wait a few moments, but when he doesn’t say anything else, my anger rises even more. “What was in the letter, Smoke?” I grind out.

“It’s better if I just show you.”
