"Was it bad?" Jacki asked. "What did you see?"

"I saw six monsters planning a horrific attack and smiling about it."

"There were six of them?" Kian filled a glass with water and handed it to her.

"Two Doomers and four cartel thugs."

"How do you know they were Doomers?" Kian motioned for her to drink up.

She took a couple of sips and put the glass down. "Visions are strange. They spoke in Spanish to the thugs, and I understood a little of it but not enough to make sense of what they were saying. Then, the two Doomers switched to their own language, which I don't understand at all, but I know how it sounds. Then they spoke to the thugs again, and although it was back to Spanish, I heard it as if it was plain English. They ordered the thugs to make an example out of that village so no one would ever oppose them again, and they told them to take the pretty girls because they're worth a lot of money."

Kian

Kian was doing his best to contain his anger, and yet he was doing a piss-poor job of it. Syssi was casting him fearful looks that cut him worse than anything she had revealed, but he couldn't bring himself under control.

It was her right to do whatever she deemed necessary to enhance her visions, and he could hate it as much as he wanted, but he couldn't stop her from doing that or be angry at her for using her Fate-given talent to help the clan.

Her latest revelation might save them a lot of trouble, provided that they made it to the burial site before the Doomers discovered what had happened to their henchmen.

"I need to tell the captain to turn around." He raked his fingers through his hair.

"Tell him we forgot someone," Jacki said. "He doesn't need to know why we are turning back, right? The less he knows, the better."

"I don't need to tell him anything. He will do as I ask." He pushed to his feet and offered Syssi a hand up. "Do you want to come with me?"

She hesitated for a split second. "Sure."

"I'm not mad," he said when they were outside the cabin.

"You could have fooled me. You still look mad."

"I'm angry because I hate when you put yourself in danger, but I also hate that I make it more difficult for you. You have every right to use your talent as you see fit as long as you don't hurt anyone else in the process. I just wish you didn't hurt yourself."

"I don't." She smiled and stretched on her toes to kiss his cheek. "Not really. I might seem fragile, and maybe I am, but I'm not a coward. What was the worst that could have happened? I would have seen something even more disturbing than what Jacki recounted? So what? If I couldn't live with it, your mother or Toven could have erased it from my brain."

He shook his head. "You know that it doesn't work like that. Remember the women we freed from the Doomers and took to Hawaii?"

"Of course. What about them?"

"Vanessa said that erasing their memories wasn't enough. They still remembered their trauma subconsciously despite the thrall, and the dissonance between what they felt but couldn't remember was detrimental to their mental health. They needed to work through it the conventional way."

Syssi let out a breath. "I didn't really plan on getting a memory wipe, but it was comforting to think that I had the option. Jacki must be made from solid titanium to handle what shesaw so well. I'm grateful to the merciful Fates for sparing me the gruesome images and only showing me the demons at the planning stage. Perhaps the Fates, or whoever else is responsible for visions, know what each seer can tolerate and grant them glimpses of the past or future accordingly."

"That's possible." Kian stopped at the door to the bridge. "I might need you to court another vision."

Syssi looked at Kian, barely able to contain her astonishment.

Who was this man, and what had he done with her overprotective husband?

"Of course," she said quickly before he could change his mind. "What do you need me to find out?"

"We need to find where the Doomers are based and how many of them are involved with the cartels."

"I'll try, but you know how visions are. I might not get the answers to my questions."

"I know, but so far the Fates have shown you what you needed to see, so I trust that they will do the same now."

"I love you." She lifted on her toes and kissed him on his lips. "You're incredible."
