Page 65 of Never Mine to Hold

The only thing that lingers is a woodsy scent in the air.

I hurry to the door and fling it open, stepping outside and staring down one long stretch of hallway before swinging around to do the same on the other side, but it’s empty.

Almost as if this entire episode was a figment of my imagination.

My head continues to spin as I slip back inside the suite and walk to the bedroom. As soon as I cross over the threshold, my phone chimes. It’s jarring in the silence that surrounds me. I glance at the screen only to find that another ten thousand dollars has been deposited into my account. Dropping onto the bed, I stare at the total sum.

Between that and the first amount, I have more than enough to pay for this semester’s tuition along with my rent for the next few months.

Relief washes over me.

But there’s something else buried beneath that as well.

Something undeniable.

Something I’m not proud of.

Anticipation.

Because the next time I meet with my mystery man, he’ll take my virginity.

Chapter 23

Wolf

I loiter against a red brick half wall with my arms crossed over my chest and search each new face for Fallyn as students pour from the glass doors. I shift, growing impatient for the sight of her. It’s been three days since our second meeting at the hotel. All I have to do is lick my lips and I can still taste her faint flavor there.

I’m so damn hungry for more.

The course I’ve set is a dangerous one. If I were smart, I’d rethink each decision before making it.

But let’s be real, I’m way too far gone and that’s not going to happen.

“Hey, Wolf.”

My head snaps to the side only to realize that a pretty girl has sidled up next to me when I wasn’t paying attention. My gaze flickers to her for a second or two before returning to the entrance of the building. I’ve seen this chick around campus and at the bar, but I have no idea what her name is off the top of my head.

“Hey, how’s it going?” Even though I toss out the question, I don’t really give a shit about the response.

Unfortunately, she takes that as a green light to proceed and sidles closer.

A little too close for comfort.

“It’s good. What are you up to? Are you finished with classes for the day?”

My gaze flickers toward her for a second time. “Um, yeah. I’m waiting around for a friend.”

I wish there were a way to stop this convo in its tracks. In my mind, I can already see how it’ll play out. She’ll ask me to do something (probably head back to her place), and I’ll turn her down flat.

“Oh.” She tucks a stray lock of shoulder-length blonde hair behind her ear. “I thought maybe if you weren’t busy?—”

I straighten to my full height as Fallyn steps into the sunshine. Her long, inky-colored hair falls around her shoulders as she scans the thick crowd. Her lips look as if she’s wearing stain on them, but I know it’s just their natural color. She’s never been one to wear a lot of makeup.

And damn if that isn’t sexy.

The sheer force of her beauty hits me like a punch to the gut every single time. It’s been that way since we were kids. Back then, I was too young to understand what it meant.

All I knew was that I wanted to protect and watch over her.
