Waiting, I swoop low over the water.

Where is Rook? Every heartbeat thuds between an eternity. Has he been captured?

I can’t go into the tower as a dragon, since I’m too big for the door, and I can’t shift back into a woman and fight. Not naked and unarmed.

Fuck, can I smash my way into the Forgotten Tower? Or would that bring down stones onto his head and crush him alive?

If he doesn’t die, I’m going to kill him for being so reckless.

Rook bursts through the door while holding a demon woman against him.

Lark.

Bruises darken her tarnished silver skin. One of her delicate horns has been broken. She stumbles, her legs tangled in a ragged gown, and Rook catches her before she falls. I’m struck by how much she resembles him.

They can’t leave this island without me.

I swoop down to the rocks. Lark stares at me, her crimson eyes blank, as if she has already seen too much to be shocked by me.

“Time to go,” Rook says.

I crouch low to the ground. He lifts his sister onto my back before climbing behind her.

We abandon the Forgotten Tower and fly back to the ruined castle at Hexfall. After I land, Rook helps his sister down to the ground. Moonlight glimmers on the Thornwood. The silver glow almost masks the bruises on her skin.

“You must be Lark,” I say. “You both look so alike.”

“He’s my twin brother.” Her voice sounds rusty with either pain or disuse.

“Twins?” Startled, my gaze snaps to Rook. “You never told me that.”

He shrugs. “Must have forgotten.”

“Who are you?” Lark asks me.

“Pyrah.”

Rook rests his hand on my shoulder. Protective. Possessive. “My mate.”

“Yourwhat?” Lark sways on her feet. “How long was I locked away?”

CHAPTERTHIRTY-SEVEN

We bring Lark to the courtyard at Hexfall. Crickets sing in the shadows.

Watching Rook take care of his twin sister, my chest aches. He’s so gentle with her. He brings his bedroll for her to rest on and a healing potion for her bruises. When he fetches her a blanket, she waves her hand at him and shoos him away. He pretends to be gruff, but I catch him smiling when he thinks his sister isn’t looking.

It’s impossible not to fall for him.

Lark keeps glancing between us. “Rook, I never thought capturing a dragon would be the best thing you have ever done.”

He shrugs. “I had to free you.”

“I’m talking about you two.” Lark rolls her eyes. “I’ve never seen you so happy.”

This time he can’t hide his smile.

Grimacing, Lark stands from the bedroll. “I can’t hide in Hexfall forever.”
